What if it were redesigned today? We asked artists and graphic designers to try,\u201d the Times opined last week. \u201cSome are functional designs, others artistic renderings; some represent America as it could be, others how the artist sees the country now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of the designs, from artist Andrew Kuo, had four rectangles; one square had red and white stripes and the other three showed solid blue, yellow, and green rectangles. \u201cAccording to the artist the red stripes represent the past, the white stripes represent the future, while the solid colors represent \u2018untapped potential,\u2019 \u201crepairing systemic racism,\u2019 and \u2018taking care of our planet,\u2019\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/twitter-mocks-nyt-redesign-of-the-american-flag\">Fox News<\/a> reported, adding:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"11\">\n<p><em>Another design titled, \u201cLift Every Voice and Sing\u201d merges several prominent flags like the \u201cDon\u2019t Tread on Me\u201d and \u201cBlack Lives Matter\u201d into one, while another monochrome, gray one with stars \u201crepresents America surrendering to its fall from power and loss of the ideals it once stood for.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The project was part of the Times\u2019 \u201cSnap Out of It, America!\u201d series, which the Times has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/07\/02\/opinion\/america-july-4-ideas.html\">described<\/a> as \u201cA new series from Times Opinion exploring bold ideas to revitalize and renew the American experiment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On July 3, the day before America\u2019s Independence Day, the Times tweeted, \u201cToday, flying the American flag from the back of a pickup truck or over a lawn is increasingly seen as a clue, albeit an imperfect one, to a person\u2019s political affiliation in a deeply divided nation.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"11.321033210332\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Today, flying the American flag from the back of a pickup truck or over a lawn is increasingly seen as a clue, albeit an imperfect one, to a person\u2019s political affiliation in a deeply divided nation. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/TODmHEmPsO\">https:\/\/t.co\/TODmHEmPsO<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 The New York Times (@nytimes) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nytimes\/status\/1411424532590694410?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 3, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Times writer Sarah Nir <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/07\/03\/nyregion\/american-flag-politics-polarization.html?smtyp=cur&amp;smid=tw-nytimes\">wrote<\/a>, \u201cWhat was once a unifying symbol \u2014 there is a star on it for each state, after all \u2014 is now alienating to some, its stripes now fault lines between people who kneel while \u2018The Star-Spangled Banner\u2019 plays and those for whom not pledging allegiance is an affront.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In June, speaking on MSNBC\u2019s \u201cMorning Joe,\u201d New York Times&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/by\/mara-gay\">editorial board member<\/a>&nbsp;Mara Gay <a href=\"https:\/\/dailywire.com\/news\/dozens-of-american-flags-disturbing-nyt-editorial-board-member\/\">pronounced<\/a> that she was \u201cdisturbed\u201d when she saw numerous American flags on pick-up trucks, claiming the message was white people telling others, \u201cThis is my country. This is not your country. I won this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gay stated:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"33\">\n<p><em>You know, the reality is here that we have a large percentage of the American population \u2014 I don\u2019t know how big it is, but we have tens of millions of Trump voters who continue to believe that their rights as citizens are under threat by simple virtue of having to share the democracy with others. I think that as long as they see \u201cAmerican-ness\u201d as the same as one with \u201cwhiteness,\u201d this is going to continue. We have to figure out how to get every American a place at the table in this democracy but how to separate \u201cAmerican-ness,\u201d America, from \u201cwhiteness.\u201d Until we can confront that and talk about that, this is really going to continue.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I was on Long Island this weekend visiting a really dear friend. I was really disturbed; I saw dozens and dozens of pick-up trucks with explicatives (sic) against Joe Biden on the back of them; Trump flags, and in some cases just dozens of American flags, which is also just disturbing, because essentially the message was clear. It was, \u201cThis is my country. This is not your country. I won this.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>And so until we\u2019re ready to have that conversation, this is going to continue. What really is concerning to me as well is it\u2019s not just Democrats in Congress; I think there\u2019s a large percentage of Americans, even from my colleagues in journalism who are invested in some way in pretending that this isn\u2019t the threat that it is. That is the real concern, because the Trump voters who are not going to get on board with democracy, they\u2019re a minority; you can marginalize them long-term. But if we don\u2019t take the threat seriously, then I think we\u2019re really all in bad shape.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Times tweeted, \u201cNew York Times editorial board member Mara Gay\u2019s comments on MSNBC have been irresponsibly taken out of context.
