Jim Banks is demanding that the National School Boards Association (NSBA) explain why it believes that federal law enforcement officials should intervene in local public education disputes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t cite a single instance of local law enforcement failing to arrest criminals who\u2019ve broken the law,\u201d Banks wrote to the group in a letter, obtained exclusively by the Daily Caller.<\/p>\n<p>Leading NSBA officials submitted a <a href=\"https:\/\/nsba.org\/-\/media\/NSBA\/File\/nsba-letter-to-president-biden-concerning-threats-to-public-schools-and-school-board-members-92921.pdf\">letter<\/a> to President Joe Biden on Sept. 29 requesting federal involvement in local school board disputes over mask mandates and critical race theory that the group <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/09\/30\/national-school-board-association-biden-admin-police-parents-terror-laws\/\">argued<\/a> could be \u201c<span id=\"page1R_mcid8\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">a form of domestic terrorism and <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">hate crimes.\u201d The group asked for assessments from the Department of Homeland Security and other federal law enforcement agencies, as well as investigations under hate crime laws and the PATRIOT Act.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The NSBA letter cites local news reports of school board officials <a href=\"https:\/\/www.app.com\/story\/news\/education\/in-our-schools\/2021\/08\/26\/nj-school-mask-mandate-sparks-disruption-boe\/5585283001\/\">ending<\/a> meetings due to participating citizens not wearing masks, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.10tv.com\/article\/news\/local\/worthington-school-board-member-receives-threats-for-masks-in-schools\/530-f3c04240-76b4-456b-aad9-8555397b5427\">written<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wiscnews.com\/bdc\/news\/local\/education\/beaver-dam-school-board-member-resigns-citing-safety-concerns-for-family\/article_066fc86c-4356-5a00-9940-187e02eb7340.html\">threats<\/a> and physical <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcwashington.com\/news\/local\/northern-virginia\/loudoun-school-board-transgender-student-policy-race-equity\/2708185\/\">confrontations<\/a>. Five days after NSBA submitted the letter, Attorney General Merrick Garland <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/ag\/page\/file\/1438986\/download\">instructed<\/a> the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to \u201c<span id=\"page50R_mcid14\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">convene meetings with federal, state, local, Tribal, and territorial leader<\/span><\/span>s\u201d to address potential threats to public education officials. Republican Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/10\/05\/tom-cotton-josh-hawley-lisa-monaco-memorandum-fbi-local-law-enforcement\/\">questioned<\/a> Monaco about the definition of domestic extremism, while Republican Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley compared Garland\u2019s instructions to McCarthyism.<\/p>\n<p>White House press secretary Jen Psaki <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/press-briefings\/2021\/10\/06\/press-briefing-by-press-secretary-jen-psaki-october-6-2021\/\">said<\/a> during her Wednesday <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/10\/06\/doocy-psaki-biden-school-board-protesters-domestic-terrorists\/\">briefing<\/a> that Garland\u2019s letter \u201cwas conveying\u201d that \u201cthreats and violence against public servants is illegal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Banks requested that the NSBA provide a list of crimes directed at school board officials that were not prosecuted by local officials.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe National School Boards Association letter is dangerous and anti-American,\u201d Banks told the Daily Caller. \u201cThe NSBA makes clear its intent to put law-abiding American citizens with legitimate concerns over public education in the crosshairs of federal law enforcement. Not only is this unacceptable, it\u2019s antithetical to the purpose of public education in this country and to America itself.
