The picture has been circulating online for at least several months.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span>Fact Check:&nbsp;<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?fbid=10103502872956400&amp;set=a.753878594180&amp;type=3&amp;theater\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Facebook post<\/a> featuring an image of lions walking near shipping containers at night has been shared over 11,000 times since Tuesday. In the caption, it claims the pictured lions escaped at the Baltimore port from a shipping container that originated from Lagos, Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>There is, however, no evidence lions were recently roaming the Port of Baltimore. Had lions been seen loose in the port, it would have been picked up by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbaltv.com\/search?q=lions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">local<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/foxbaltimore.com\/search?find=lions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">news<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/baltimore.cbslocal.com\/search\/?q=lions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stations<\/a>, yet none have reported on such an incident occurring. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baltimorecity.gov\/news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The City of Baltimore<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/mpa.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maryland Port Administration<\/a> have not mentioned stray lions at the port in any press releases, nor have they issued <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PortOfBalt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">any<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baltimorecity.gov\/connect#twitter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">warnings<\/a> about such a thing on social media.<\/p>\n<p>While Check Your Fact was unable to locate the original source of the photo of the lions, a reverse image search shows it has been circulating online for at least several months. In May, the Greek website Gazzetta published the picture in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gazzetta.gr\/plus\/koinwnia\/article\/1596921\/liontaria-drapeteysan-sto-limani-toy-peiraia-kinitopoiisi-kai-fake-news-pic?fbclid=IwAR3dNVwbkGYXPrMkK4nnqvDRbJ0NtFMCC428UNaJsMDZXIYf5jsBmjlC_YU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">story<\/a> debunking the claim it was taken in the Port of Piraeus. The Tribuna de Parana, a Brazilian news outlet, <a href=\"https:\/\/tribunapr.uol.com.br\/noticias\/parana\/leoas-flagradas-circulando-no-porto-de-paranagua-fake-ou-verdade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">also featured<\/a> the image in a May article about it not showing the Port of Paranagu\u00e1.<\/p>\n<p>When asked about the picture of the lions, Maryland Port Administration spokesperson Richard Scher confirmed via email, \u201cThat is not at the Port of Baltimore.\u201d <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2020\/03\/24\/fact-check-russia-500-lions-look-streets-coronavirus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Did Russia Let Over 500 Lions Loose To Keep Indoors During The Coronavirus Pandemic?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere have never been lions running around the Port of Baltimore,\u201d Scher went on to say. \u201cOur understanding is that the photo was circulating two years ago and has been rehashed and repackaged.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There have been documented instances of lions wandering around ports.
