Bernie Sanders, who caucuses with the Democrats, told reporters. However, he added, Democrats will not use the reconciliation process to raise the debt ceiling after the short-term hike ends. McConnell\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/10\/06\/mitch-mcconnell-democrats-debt-ceiling-extension-default\/\">offer<\/a> would raise the debt ceiling through the month of November, allowing Democrats to use reconciliation to raise the debt ceiling unilaterally.<\/p>\n<p>The offer \u201cmoot[s] Democrats\u2019 excuses about the time crunch they created and give the unified Democratic government more than enough time to pass standalone debt limit legislation through reconciliation,\u201d McConnell <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LeaderMcConnell\/status\/1445814140979740679\/photo\/1\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" readability=\"12.23828125\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">\u201cThere\u2019s not going to be reconciliation,\u201d Bernie adds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMitch McConnell did not get what he wanted,\u201d said Sen. Tammy Duckworth <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/burgessev\/status\/1445847211322089474\">characterized<\/a> McConnell\u2019s offer as \u201cfolding\u201d while saying that Democrats will \u201cnever\u201d use reconciliation to raise the debt limit.<\/p>\n<p>Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned that the U.S. government will default on its debts by Oct. 18, which could lead to a downgrade of the government\u2019s credit rating, a worldwide recession and a pause on Social Security payments, if the debt ceiling was not raised.<\/p>\n<p>The Senate was originally scheduled to vote on a cloture motion that would allow a vote on the debt ceiling Wednesday afternoon, but McConnell\u2019s offer and the subsequent Democrat caucus meeting delayed the vote. <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/10\/04\/chuck-schumer-congress-raise-debt-ceiling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>(Schumer: Congress Must Raise Debt Ceiling This Week)<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>White House press secretary Jen Psaki claimed during her Wednesday press conference that Democrats \u201cdon\u2019t need to kick the can.
