We are not going to default on our debt.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/TpsIvhVDua\">https:\/\/t.co\/TpsIvhVDua<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/iFWZOfRU4K\">pic.twitter.com\/iFWZOfRU4K<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 ABC News (@ABC) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ABC\/status\/1445777989791191043?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 6, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">Manchin also <a href=\"https:\/\/hotair.com\/allahpundit\/2021\/10\/06\/manchin-suggests-im-not-tweaking-the-filibuster-to-raise-the-debt-ceiling-and-im-still-at-1-5-trillion-on-reconciliation-n420646\"><span class=\"s1\">reiterated<\/span><\/a> to the press that his \u201cnumber\u2019s been $1.5 [trillion]\u201d for the reconciliation bill.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/senate-democrats-discuss-creating-filibuster-exemption-for-debt-ceiling-reports\"><span class=\"s1\">reported<\/span><\/a> by The Daily Wire on Tuesday, Senate Democrats circulated the idea of making an exemption from the filibuster to solve the debt ceiling situation, according to reports.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">As previously <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/senate\/575456-senate-democrats-float-filibuster-carve-out-for-debt-ceiling\"><span class=\"s1\">reported<\/span><\/a>&nbsp;by The Hill:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"17.584033613445\">\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>The idea was brought up during a closed-door caucus lunch on Tuesday, sources confirmed to The Hill, as Democrats try to figure out how to avoid a historic debt default.&nbsp;<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>Sen.&nbsp;<\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/dick-durbin\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>Dick Durbin<\/i><\/span><\/a><i>&nbsp;(D-Ill.), who told reporters as recently as Monday that there were not active talks, confirmed to The Hill on Tuesday that Democrats are now discussing a filibuster carveout for the debt ceiling.&nbsp;<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>\u201cThere are discussions,\u201d he told The Hill, asked about the status of potential talks.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">To make such a move, all 50 Democrats, plus Vice President Kamala Harris as the tie-breaker, would need to be on board.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">On Wednesday, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) offered Democrats a short-term fix to avoid the country defaulting on its debt.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/mcconnell-offers-short-term-solution-to-prevent-another-self-created-democrat-crisis-on-debt-limit\"><span class=\"s1\">reported<\/span><\/a> by The Daily Wire, \u201cMcConnell noted in a statement that Senate Republicans have warned Democrats for nearly three months that they would need to use the reconciliation process to raise the debt limit because Republicans do not support Democrats\u2019 extreme agenda.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cMcConnell offered a short-term suspension of the debt ceiling for several weeks to avoid sending the country into default. This offer will also force Democrats to pass a permanent solution on their own when the suspension ends in December.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cRepublicans remain the only party with a plan to prevent default,\u201d McConnell said in a statement. \u201cWe have already made it clear we would assist in expediting the 304 reconciliation process for stand-alone debt-limit legislation.
