Kendi, the best-selling author of&nbsp;<em>How to be an Antiracist<\/em>, said in a recent interview.<\/p>\n<p>Kendi said he believes in black liberation theology, as opposed to \u201cwhite evangelical theology,\u201d which allegedly teaches that black people are \u201ca backward, uncivilized, sort of, savage race, and Jesus came \u2026 to save black people\u201d and \u201cso-called \u2018white trash\u2019 from themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kendi, one of the foremost popularizers of the ideas associated with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/what-is-critical-race-theory-breaking-down-the-ideology-thats-hitting-schools-across-the-country\">Critical Race Theory<\/a>, expounded on his religious views during an hourlong interview program sponsored by Uproxx, titled \u201cPeople\u2019s Party with Talib Kweli.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kweli began the religious discussion. \u201cAny Gospel that does not speak to liberation is not truly Gospel,\u201d said Kweli during the July 6 interview. \u201cThe understanding of Jesus as a radical revolutionary nowadays is more popular than it used to be,\u201d something he credits to Cornel West, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dsausa.org\/democratic-left\/cornel_west_endorses_bernie_sanders\/\">honorary chairman<\/a> of the Democratic Socialists of America and faculty member at Union Theological Seminary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan you break down the difference between, you know, seeing Jesus Christ as a figure of liberation versus like the white nationalist Christ?\u201d Kweli asked Kendi. Kendi responded:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"33\">\n<p><em>In many ways, you know, white evangelical theology projects Jesus as not only white \u2014 but not only a white Savior, but a white Savior of people of color and even, you know \u2014 because we, apparently, according to this theology, were a backward, uncivilized, sort of, savage race. And Jesus came, apparently, to save humanity, particularly to save black people, to save even poor whites, those so-called \u201cwhite trash\u201d from themselves, while liberation theology and black liberation theology is like, no, Jesus was a \u2014 as you stated \u2014 a radical revolutionary that came to free the people from the clutches of Babylon and oppression, and from the clutches of empire, whether it was the Roman empire or the American empire, and that the engine or the job of the church, you know, is to be a place or a space, really, a home of revolutionaries.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Kendi has expressed the same theological beliefs more cogently in the past.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/therightswriter.com\/2018\/07\/if-anyone-was-ever-a-socialist-it-was-jesus-democratic-socialists-of-america-leader\/\">Jesus was a revolutionary<\/a>, and the job of the Christian is to revolutionize society,\u201d Kendi&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/wokepreachertv\/status\/1374339828175753217\">said<\/a> in a video shot in 2019. \u201cThe job of the Christian is to liberate society from the powers on Earth that are oppressing humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He then contrasted what he called \u201cSavior theology\u201d with \u201cliberation theology.\u201d Christians who hold to \u201cSavior theology\u201d believe that \u201cthe job of the Christian is to go out and save these individuals who are behaviorally deficient\u201d \u2014 his term for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Romans%203%3A23&amp;version=KJV\">people who commit sin<\/a>. \u201cWe are to bring them into the church \u2014 these individuals who are doing all these evil, sinful things \u2014 and heal them, and save them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Proclaiming the Gospel that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1+Timothy+1%3A15&amp;version=NKJV\">Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners<\/a> has been the core of the Christian message for more than 2,000 years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat goes right in line with racist ideas and racist theology,\u201d Kendi said because it teaches that the reason some \u201cblack people [and] other racial groups [are] struggling on Earth is because of what they\u2019re doing behaviorally wrong. And it is my job as a pastor is to, sort of, save these wayward black people, or wayward poor people, or wayward queer people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat type of theology breeds bigotry,\u201d Kendi said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAntiracists fundamentally reject Savior theology,\u201d Kendi admitted. And they teach that the growing popularity of collectivism among young people poses a long-term danger to the Christian message.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe revival of socialism is a major challenge of our age,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/decisionmagazine.com\/albert-mohler-the-coming-socialist-storm\/\">wrote<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/albertmohler.com\/\">Dr. Albert Mohler<\/a>, the president of&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sbts.edu\/\">The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary<\/a>, in Decision magazine, the publication <a href=\"https:\/\/billygraham.org\/\">founded<\/a> by Billy Graham. \u201cChristians must recognize that socialism \u2026 is based on a materialist view of the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Christian economists agree that economic collectivism is not found in the pages of the Bible, and Jesus\u2019 instructions were intended for individual transformation, not social revolution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne can scour the New Testament and find nary a word from Jesus that calls for empowering politicians or bureaucrats to allocate resources, pick winners and losers, tell entrepreneurs how to run their businesses, impose minimum wages or maximum prices, compel workers to join unions, or even to raise taxes,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/fee.org\/articles\/no-jesus-wasnt-a-socialist\/\">wrote<\/a> Lawrence W. Reed of the <a href=\"https:\/\/fee.org\/\">Foundation for Economic Education<\/a>. \u201cChristianity is not about passing the buck to the government when it comes to relieving the plight of the poor. Caring for them, which means helping them overcome it, not paying them to stay poor or making them dependent upon the state, has been an essential fact in the life of a true Christian for 2,000 years. Christian charity, being voluntary and heartfelt, is utterly distinct from the compulsory, impersonal mandates of the state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reed made the first edition of his book <a href=\"https:\/\/fee.org\/resources\/rendering-unto-caesar-was-jesus-a-socialist\/\">Render Under Caesar: Was Jesus A Socialist?<\/a> available for download free. (He substantially <a href=\"https:\/\/store.fee.org\/collections\/best-sellers\/products\/was-jesus-a-socialist\">expanded and updated<\/a> the book in 2020.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJesus never endorsed the forced redistribution of wealth,\u201d Reed said when he addressed the topic in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=i9EXnVitkmo\">PragerU video<\/a>. \u201cThat idea is rooted in envy, something He and a tenth of the Ten Commandments railed against.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Was Jesus a Socialist? | 5 Minute Video\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/i9EXnVitkmo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p>In the July interview, Kendi also expressed no disagreement when Kweli associated him with Critical Race Theory.
