The year that saw Black Lives Matter-inspired racial turbulence on a scale that hadn\u2019t been seen since 1968 blew past that year\u2019s previous record murder spike of 12 percent.<\/p>\n<p>That is an extra 5,000 Americans killed in 2020, a majority of them African-Americans, as they make up 53 percent of homicide victims. All told, this brings the number of extra Americans murdered since 2014 \u2014 the year Black Lives Matter\u2019s founders gathered with other far-leftist groups in the city of Ferguson, Mo., to organize a nationwide movement with revolutionary demands \u2014 to perhaps more than 11,000.<\/p>\n<p>The New York Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/09\/22\/upshot\/murder-rise-2020.html?smid=tw-nytimes&amp;smtyp=cur\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/09\/22\/upshot\/murder-rise-2020.html?smid%3Dtw-nytimes%26smtyp%3Dcur&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1633538997533000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGsFu3JoflEzh6e2sz8WGbpCyQpdQ\">wrote about the FBI report<\/a> last week after its eagle-eyed crime writer Jeff Asher noticed that the FBI had posted the information online briefly before being taken down. The Federal Bureau of Investigation\u2019s Uniform Crime Report, where the information was contained, was published on Monday, Sept. 27. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2021\/09\/2020-homicide-spike-was-real\/620183\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2021\/09\/2020-homicide-spike-was-real\/620183\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1633538997533000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHvhzw2mhS9t6jdKgGfhgu9OHWmUw\">Atlantic<\/a> and other publications followed the Times\u2019 lead.<\/p>\n<p>Except that the Times and the others didn\u2019t see fit to include in their reports the words Black Lives Matter or the organization\u2019s main battle cry of \u201cDefund the Police.\u201d Their articles instead hypothesized that the extra deaths were due to \u201cvarious pandemic stresses\u201d \u2014 in the words of the Times, which also included for good measure, \u201cincreased firearm carrying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The articles did mention what the Times misleadingly referred to as \u201cincreased distrust between the police and the public,\u201d after the death of George Floyd as a second plausible reason for the extra 5,000 murders we had in 2020. But to both publications, the pandemic was the most obvious explanation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore people were at home, creating different social patterns. More people lost jobs and might have turned to dangerous and criminal behavior to make ends meet. People were stressed and unhappy,\u201d the Atlantic said.<\/p>\n<p>The pandemic explanation doesn\u2019t hold water, however, and we are likely to continue to see extra deaths \u2014 again, most of them black \u2014 unless we openly discuss the facts about the deaths and BLM (and also Antifa, which is very violent, but seems to lack BLM\u2019s organizational muscle). That homicides continue to rise in 2021, to the tune of 10 percent according to the FBI, does not augur well.<\/p>\n<p>Writing in The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/the-murder-spike-of-2020-when-police-pull-back-11626969547\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/the-murder-spike-of-2020-when-police-pull-back-11626969547&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1633538997533000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHjMPxDqRki2eEzNHLHLrgmaNv3wg\">Wall Street Journal<\/a> on 2020\u2019s crime surge in July, the criminologist Peter Moskos said, \u201cWere the stress and economic hardship of the pandemic a factor? Perhaps in some places. But Covid struck hard in Baltimore and Newark, for example, and the murder rate in those cities didn\u2019t increase. There was economic anxiety in Anchorage, but murders declined there by 50%.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/jnix.netlify.app\/files\/pdfs\/denpo_depolicing.pdf\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/jnix.netlify.app\/files\/pdfs\/denpo_depolicing.pdf&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1633538997533000&amp;usg=AFQjCNH4XdNe99Hn-DvL3H2kAbQ7HQOqtA\">an analysis<\/a> on Feb. 24 on Denver\u2019s horrendous 50 percent rise in murders in 2020, David Pyrooz, Justin Nix, and Scott Wolfe note that the rise in homicides was the same in the first 10 weeks of the year, leading to Colorado\u2019s lockdown, as in 11 subsequent weeks, leading to the May 25 killing of George Floyd.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe killing of Floyd, and the legitimacy crisis it created, accelerated violence in Denver, Pyrooz, Nix and Wolfe wrote. \u201cFrom the end of May through the rest of 2020, all of the crimes we analyzed increased dramatically\u2014violent crime by 25% and property crime by 39%, compared to the same period 2016-19. Homicide spiked in this period by 54%, as did robberies (11%), aggravated assaults (31%), and motor vehicle theft (87%). Like many U.S. cities, Denver was a different place in the latter half of 2020, and not for the better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The rest of the world also locked down for Covid, with millions dying or losing their livelihoods. Yet only the U.S. saw a sharp increase in murders. As Hans Bader of the Competitive Enterprise Institute <a href=\"https:\/\/cnsnews.com\/commentary\/hans-bader\/murder-spiked-2020-keeps-going-and-its-not-due-covid\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/cnsnews.com\/commentary\/hans-bader\/murder-spiked-2020-keeps-going-and-its-not-due-covid&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1633538997533000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEkB9F1U8TzRZx7ehsqoTafTO__LA\">put it<\/a>, \u201cMost of the world&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cnsnews.com\/commentary\/hans-bader\/leftists-wrongly-blame-pandemic-rise-us-violent-crime\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/cnsnews.com\/commentary\/hans-bader\/leftists-wrongly-blame-pandemic-rise-us-violent-crime&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1633538997533000&amp;usg=AFQjCNETgUa0Jkg2TTRPsA09uLJuqmAAbw\">saw<\/a>&nbsp;reductions in homicide rates in 2020. Murder rates actually fell in most countries that lost many people to the coronavirus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By contrast, <a href=\"https:\/\/papers.ssrn.com\/sol3\/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3715223\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/papers.ssrn.com\/sol3\/papers.cfm?abstract_id%3D3715223&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1633538997533000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHocwLMJ-zGGAoq7lWZb2-e3Vsipg\">the evidence<\/a> that police increasingly pulled back and stopped making arrests, or quit the force altogether, is strong. The reason for 2020\u2019s extra deaths, as Bader said, was that, \u201cincarceration&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnsnews.com\/commentary\/hans-bader\/leftists-wrongly-blame-pandemic-rise-us-violent-crime\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.cnsnews.com\/commentary\/hans-bader\/leftists-wrongly-blame-pandemic-rise-us-violent-crime&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1633538997533000&amp;usg=AFQjCNH-l6eIzZzHmVT4G4wJRDbM3oeNqg\">rates fell<\/a>, police manpower&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/it-wasnt-the-pandemic-that-increased-violent-crime-in-america\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/it-wasnt-the-pandemic-that-increased-violent-crime-in-america&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1633538997533000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHQJkTS8YG8hJf_o-wQ7AWPrZbkJw\">shrank<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/it-wasnt-the-pandemic-that-increased-violent-crime-in-america\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/it-wasnt-the-pandemic-that-increased-violent-crime-in-america&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1633538997533000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHQJkTS8YG8hJf_o-wQ7AWPrZbkJw\">anti-police protests<\/a>&nbsp;spread across the nation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pyrooz, Nix, and Wolfe name three effects from the anti-police rhetoric we saw in 2020: \u201cThe first is depolicing, where officers pull back from proactive policing in response to public criticism. Second, depleted trust in the law means citizens will think twice about calling the police to report crimes or suspicious behaviors. Lastly, delegitimacy of the law emboldens criminal offending populations, as the moral obligation to follow the law is weakened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There is also the fact that rogue prosecutors elected with far-leftist money are releasing criminals from prison or not prosecuting them in the first place, as my Heritage colleagues Cully Stimson and Zack Smith have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heritage.org\/rogue-prosecutors\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.heritage.org\/rogue-prosecutors&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1633538997534000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGhtvtZiQHthldxJ-O250wJWc3bdg\">pointed out<\/a>. \u201cThe number of people in America\u2019s prisons and jails&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sentencing.typepad.com\/sentencing_law_and_policy\/2021\/01\/vera-institute-reports-on-people-in-jail-and-prison-in-2020-and-finds-us-total-now-well-below-two-mi.html\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/sentencing.typepad.com\/sentencing_law_and_policy\/2021\/01\/vera-institute-reports-on-people-in-jail-and-prison-in-2020-and-finds-us-total-now-well-below-two-mi.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1633538997534000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHp8dPgo7bkUhgWvH0p7HLSWi9yAw\">dropped by 14%<\/a>&nbsp;from 2019 to mid-2020,\u201d writes Bader.<\/p>\n<p>That the violence BLM\u2019s mayhem leaves in its wake leads to horrendous spikes in murder is not new. According to research conducted by Travis Campbell, at the University of Massachusetts, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/22360290\/black-lives-matter-protest-crime-ferguson-effects-murder\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.vox.com\/22360290\/black-lives-matter-protest-crime-ferguson-effects-murder&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1633538997534000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFBXVKsigzzAFl-ogTS_NJigmgPHg\">reported<\/a> earlier this year by Vox, there were between 1,000 and 6,000 extra murders between 2014 and 2019 in areas of the country where BLM had protested. That is called \u201cthe Ferguson effect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That means that extra deaths as a result of BLM turbulence could now very well be in five figures, and that does not take 2021\u2019s murders into account.<\/p>\n<p>And it was very much BLM\u2019s mayhem, with an assist from Antifa. The turbulence of 2020 did not happen spontaneously, as the media likes to pretend. It said that BLMGNF sent an astonishing 127 million emails in 2020, which had an unheard-of open rate of 63 percent, compared to an average of 25 percent for nonprofits. \u201cFrom these emails, 1,213,992 actions were taken,\u201d the report boasted, adding that \u201cthe BLMGNF website was visited by over 24 million people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We understand now why BLM activists were involved in 95 percent of the 633 incidents that <a href=\"https:\/\/acleddata.com\/2020\/09\/03\/demonstrations-political-violence-in-america-new-data-for-summer-2020\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/acleddata.com\/2020\/09\/03\/demonstrations-political-violence-in-america-new-data-for-summer-2020\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1633538997534000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHLkyrkYC84kE01LhGczEBBSAK73w\">Princeton\u2019s Armed Conflict Loca\u00adtion and Event Data Project<\/a> coded as \u201criots\u201d for which the identity of the rioter was known.<\/p>\n<p>The media refuses to connect these obvious dots, which keeps many good Americans for whom black lives do truly matter in ignorance about the true nature and impact of the organizations that go under that label.<\/p>\n<p><em>Mike Gonzalez is the Angeles T.
