{"id":847969,"date":"2021-10-05T06:43:53","date_gmt":"2021-10-05T10:43:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/?p=847969"},"modified":"2021-10-05T08:57:07","modified_gmt":"2021-10-05T12:57:07","slug":"rochester-mayor-lovely-warren-to-resign-as-part-of-plea-deal-over-alleged-campaign-finance-violations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/rochester-mayor-lovely-warren-to-resign-as-part-of-plea-deal-over-alleged-campaign-finance-violations\/","title":{"rendered":"Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren to Resign as Part of Plea Deal Over Alleged Campaign Finance Violations"},"content":{"rendered":"<aside class=\"mashsb-container mashsb-main mashsb-stretched\"><div class=\"mashsb-box\"><div class=\"mashsb-count mash-medium\" style=\"&quot;\"><div class=\"counts mashsbcount\">32<\/div><span class=\"mashsb-sharetext\">SHARES<\/span><\/div><div class=\"mashsb-buttons\"><a class=\"mashicon-facebook mash-medium mash-nomargin mashsb-noshadow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/sharer.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.conservativenewsdaily.net%2Fbreaking-news%2Frochester-mayor-lovely-warren-to-resign-as-part-of-plea-deal-over-alleged-campaign-finance-violations%2F\" target=\"_top\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span class=\"icon\"><\/span><span class=\"text\">Facebook<\/span><\/a><a class=\"mashicon-twitter mash-medium mash-nomargin mashsb-noshadow\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?text=&amp;url=https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/?p=847969&amp;via=ConservNewsDly\" target=\"_top\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span class=\"icon\"><\/span><span class=\"text\">Twitter<\/span><\/a><a class=\"mashicon-subscribe mash-medium mash-nomargin mashsb-noshadow\" href=\"#\" target=\"_top\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span class=\"icon\"><\/span><span class=\"text\">Subscribe<\/span><\/a><div class=\"onoffswitch2 mash-medium mashsb-noshadow\" style=\"display:none\"><\/div><\/div>\n            <\/div>\n                <div style=\"clear:both\"><\/div><\/aside>\n            <!-- Share buttons by mashshare.net - Version: 4.0.47--><p>Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren\u00a0will resign from office by Dec. 1 after accepting the terms of a plea deal in court on Monday where she faced charges over alleged\u00a0campaign finance violations, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochesterfirst.com\/local-politics\/monroe-county-district-attorney-to-make-announcement-on-new-york-state-board-of-elections-investigation\/\">Rochester First reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Warren, along with two assistants, Albert Jones Jr.,\u00a0her campaign treasurer,\u00a0and Rosiland Brooks-Harris, political action committee treasurer and Rochester finance director, were each accused of\u00a0violating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-election-laws\">election laws<\/a> when they accepted\u00a0campaign contributions that exceeded legal limits.<\/p>\n<p>Warren\u00a0faced two felony counts, including scheme to defraud in the first degree, and violation of election law 14-126 related to the alleged campaign finance violations\u00a0during her 2017 mayoral reelection efforts.<\/p>\n<p>According to 2017 expenditures of Warren\u2019s political action committee, Warren for a Stronger Rochester PAC, $30,000 was transferred from the PAC to her committee, Friends of Lovely Warren.<\/p>\n<p>The mayor had previously denied allegations that she violated\u00a0campaign finance rules, and claimed the money was accidentally placed in the PAC through a \u201cPayPal error,\u201d or bookkeeping mistake.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the deal offered to Warren by the prosecution on Monday, the mayor pleaded guilty and was sentenced to a 12-month conditional discharge.\u00a0Both\u00a0Jones Jr. and\u00a0Brooks-Harris have also\u00a0pleaded guilty in the case.<\/p>\n<p>Warren\u2019s attorney Mike Schiano said prosecutors were adamant she resign from office as part of the deal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe talked about it over the weekend, but they approached us with that offer and we hammered it through,\u201d defense attorney\u00a0Schiano said, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/spectrumlocalnews.com\/nys\/rochester\/politics\/2021\/10\/04\/mayor-warren-to-resign-from-office-after-accepting-plea-deal-in-campaign-fraud-case\">Spectrum News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey wanted a resignation,\u201d Schiano said. \u201cThat was what the sticking point of the DA\u2019s office was. (Jamie Germano\/Democrat &amp; Chronicle via AP)<\/figure>\n<p>New York State Police executed a search warrant at the home\u00a0as part of an ongoing investigation into\u00a0Granison who authorities say is part of a drug trafficking ring in Rochester.\u00a0Police allegedly recovered\u00a0a rifle and pistol inside, and found Warren\u2019s 10-year-old daughter alone.<\/p>\n<p>Both Warren and her husband were charged with criminal possession of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-firearm\">firearm<\/a>, endangering the welfare of a child, and failure to secure the firearm.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, Warren said she had no\u00a0knowledge of her husband\u2019s alleged illegal activity and that they had been separated for some time.\u00a0Both Warren and Granison later pleaded not guilty to the charges.<\/p>\n<p>Warren was set to leave\u00a0office in January after losing in June\u2019s primary to\u00a0current City Councilmember Malik Evans, who is\u00a0the next presumptive mayor of Rochester. Deputy Mayor James Smith will become mayor of\u00a0Rochester\u00a0for a month now that Warren is stepping down from the role.<\/p>\n<p>Following Monday\u2019s guilty plea, Warren took to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/allypetersnews\/status\/1445195193859416065\">Facebook\u00a0to post<\/a>: \u201cLeaving the past behind and looking forward to a brighter future. Thank you, Rochester. We\u2019ve accomplished a lot together, but in the end, I thank God that I\u2019m able to choose family over everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her\u00a0defense attorney Joe Damelio also told reporters that the mayor is \u201cnot a drug dealer\u201d or \u00a0irresponsible \u201cgun-toting person\u201d who is incapable of looking after her child.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoreover, she is that person who looks after her child and is concerned for her child and that\u2019s part of the reason she entered a plea today,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Monroe County Assistant District Attorney Jacob Ark also urged the community to move on from the case and put the past behind them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s time for our community and our city to put this past us,\u201d Ark said. \u201cAnd the mayor was willing and the co-defendants were willing to take responsibility and did so today.
