Doctors David Julius and Ardem Patapoutian were awarded the prize in medicine on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>They have been praised for their work in the field of somatosensation, which focuses on how specialized organs such as the eyes, ears and skin react to sounds, temperatures and other stimuli. Dr. Julius reportedly used the active ingredients from chili peppers to identify nerves which respond to heat.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">BREAKING NEWS:<br \/>The 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/NobelPrize?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#NobelPrize<\/a> in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded jointly to David Julius and Ardem Patapoutian \u201cfor their discoveries of receptors for temperature and touch.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/gB2eL37IV7\">pic.twitter.com\/gB2eL37IV7<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 The Nobel Prize (@NobelPrize) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NobelPrize\/status\/1444958764965236738?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 4, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In addition, Dr. Patapoutian found pressure sensitive cells, which respond to certain kinds of stimulation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s incredibly exciting. It concerns one of our senses and we all know, you know, how important it is to sense our surroundings for our survival,\u201d expressed Secretary General Thomas Perlmann of the Nobel Committee. \u201cThis is a sense that, like the other ones, are absolutely crucial for us to survive.
