AFP PHOTO\/Mandel NGAN (Photo credit should read MANDEL NGAN\/AFP via Getty Images)\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\t\t\t<span class=\"text-gray text-xs md:text-lg\"><a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/author\/eliana-johnson\/\" title=\"Posts by Eliana Johnson\" class=\"author url fn text-red-700\" rel=\"author\">Eliana Johnson<\/a> \u2022 October 4, 2021 7:00 pm<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<div readability=\"150.53563791875\">\n<p>The Facebook whistleblower who revealed herself in a <em>60 Minutes<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/facebook-whistleblower-frances-haugen-misinformation-public-60-minutes-2021-10-03\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/facebook-whistleblower-frances-haugen-misinformation-public-60-minutes-2021-10-03\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1633467525824000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHyI3Y-wQ7ETxCy6mnjQE8spUym0g\">interview<\/a> is getting strategic communications guidance from a top Democratic operative, according to a source with direct knowledge of the relationship, which was confirmed by another half-dozen sources with indirect knowledge of the partnership.<\/p>\n<p>Frances Haugen, the former Facebook employee who has for the past 10 months fed internal documents to a top <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em> reporter, and who revealed her identity in a primetime broadcast on Sunday, is working with the political consultant and former Obama administration deputy press secretary Bill Burton and his consulting firm, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brysongillette.com\/\">Bryson Gillette.<\/a> It is unclear when Haugen&#8217;s relationship with Burton and Bryson Gillette began, how big her communications team is, and whether it includes other political operatives.<\/p>\n<p>But Burton is now deeply integrated with an emerging infrastructure on the left comprised of individuals and organizations, including the nonprofit Center for Humane Technology, seeking to press Facebook to more aggressively police political content.<\/p>\n<p>In Haugen&#8217;s public testimony, industry and political insiders see a sophisticated communications campaign intended to put Facebook on defense, from a steady trickle of leaked internal documents that fueled a <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em> investigative <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/the-facebook-files-11631713039\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/the-facebook-files-11631713039&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1633467525824000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHnMnsO2fy5P8g0VPP_NkZG8z_0bA\">series<\/a> dubbed &#8220;The Facebook Files&#8221; to the blockbuster <em>60 Minutes<\/em> interview to congressional testimony scheduled to begin Tuesday. Haugen on Sunday also debuted a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.franceshaugen.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.franceshaugen.com\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1633467525824000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEJUemce_FRXG7yAoo5y20nsC7BSw\">slick personal website<\/a> in part to field media requests.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It does have the appearance of being an incredibly well-orchestrated communications campaign,&#8221; said the GOP operative Kevin McLaughlin, the former director of the National Republican Senatorial Committee.<\/p>\n<p>Neither Burton nor Haugen responded to a request for comment, though sources say reporters and Burton himself have been open about the relationship.<\/p>\n<p>Haugen&#8217;s <em>60 Minutes<\/em> interview kicked off a media feeding frenzy, with the story mentioned at least 200 times on cable news since the segment aired, according to a review conducted by the <em>Washington Free Beacon<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2016, both political parties have gone after Big Tech companies like Facebook, with the left charging that the company&#8217;s failure to adequately police &#8220;disinformation,&#8221; helped tip the election to Donald Trump and the right charging that it arbitrarily silences conservative voices.<\/p>\n<p>Burton&#8217;s involvement helping to manage Haugen&#8217;s public debut suggests that her argument is part of a broader Democratic initiative. A Facebook employee in the company&#8217;s now-defunct &#8220;civic integrity&#8221; division until May, Haugen is calling for the federal government to intervene against the company. Though she did not specify in the Sunday interview what sorts of regulations she might support, she is likely to be pressed on that when she appears on Capitol Hill on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Burton himself has also been an outspoken Facebook critic, likening them to tobacco companies that knowingly poisoned people and concealed the health risks of using their products \u2014 an analogy Haugen is expected to use in her congressional testimony.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The thing that the social media companies are doing, it&#8217;s sort of like the tobacco companies, like when people first started making and selling cigarettes, people didn\u2019t know about cancer,&#8221; he said. &#8220;But then they did, and the tobacco companies would sort of tinker with the nicotine to maximize the addiction.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Haugen is expected to make the same point in her opening testimony tomorrow, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/facebook-accountable-no-one-whistleblower-will-say-testimony-2021-10-04\/?taid=615b61f2b735d700013c7fb3&amp;utm_campaign=trueAnthem:+Trending+Content&amp;utm_medium=trueAnthem&amp;utm_source=twitter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/facebook-accountable-no-one-whistleblower-will-say-testimony-2021-10-04\/?taid%3D615b61f2b735d700013c7fb3%26utm_campaign%3DtrueAnthem:%2BTrending%2BContent%26utm_medium%3DtrueAnthem%26utm_source%3Dtwitter&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1633467525824000&amp;usg=AFQjCNG-6GIdbs5WABMGryV52jrikEDt9g\">according to<\/a> a copy of that testimony obtained by Reuters. &#8220;When we realized tobacco companies were hiding the harms it caused, the government took action,&#8221; her testimony reads. &#8220;When we figured out cars were safer with seat belts, the government took action. I implore you to do the same here.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Facebook <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/facebook-statement-60-minutes-whistleblower-2021-10-03\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/facebook-statement-60-minutes-whistleblower-2021-10-03\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1633467525824000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGfelIT7WAT8VbZfP8zgB0TkqafWw\">pushed back<\/a> on the report, telling <em>60 Minutes<\/em> that the company works diligently to &#8220;balance protecting the right of billions of people to express themselves openly with the need to keep our platform a safe and positive place.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Now a public affairs consultant, Burton, the founder of the Democratic super PAC Priorities USA Action, also serves on the board of the Center for Humane Technology, a nonprofit organization founded in 2018 that has pit itself against technology companies like Facebook, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humanetech.com\/what-we-do\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.humanetech.com\/what-we-do&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1633467525824000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGsYEkSZ7egn_ljCU_7hy6T5OCI6w\">arguing that<\/a> they are incentivized to stoke outrage and polarization at the cost of human well-being. The organization produced the 2020 Netflix documentary &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesocialdilemma.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.thesocialdilemma.com\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1633467525824000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGXdq_t0di-bPjHtDuOo0qkfIDvPA\">The Social Dilemma<\/a>,&#8221; which explores the deleterious influence of social media on its users.
