Greg Abbott (R) has urged the state legislature to strengthen penalties for illegal voting. <a href=\"https:\/\/gov.texas.gov\/uploads\/files\/press\/MESSAGE_3rd_called_87th_adding_matter_to_call_IMAGE_09-30-21.pdf\">In a message<\/a> to Texas Secretary of Senate Patsy Spaw on Thursday, Abbott called on state lawmakers to pass legislation to increase penalties for illegal voting.<\/p>\n<p>This comes after the state reduced illegal voting to a Class A misdemeanor from a second degree felony as part of an elections reform bill, which was passed earlier this year. Abbott contended increasing penalties for illegal voting would send a clearer message about not tolerating voter fraud.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTexas has made tremendous progress in upholding the integrity of our elections,\u201d he expressed in a tweet. \u201cIncreasing penalties for illegal voting will send an even clearer message that voter fraud will not be tolerated in Texas.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Thanks <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GovAbbott?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@GovAbbott<\/a> for placing a correction to an amd. on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/SB1?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#SB1<\/a>, which decreases the penalty for voting illegally, on the call. The House added last minute &amp; went under the radar until Gov., <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TXAG?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@TXAG<\/a> &amp; I found it &amp; agreed then it must be corrected.
