Petito\u2019s autopsy was conducted by the Teton County coroner.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Petito, a 22-year-old woman who went missing on a road trip with her fianc\u00e9, was found dead Sept. 19 in Wyoming, with her death later being ruled a homicide by authorities, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/gabby-petito-brian-laundrie-timeline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CBS News<\/a> reported. Her fianc\u00e9, Brian Laundrie, who is the subject of a manhunt, was named a person of interest in her case and has been charged with <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FBIDenver\/status\/1441170971453390874?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">unauthorized use of a debit card<\/a>, according to the outlet.<\/p>\n<p>Social media users have since been sharing a screen grab of a tweet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CUX-bt6FA_p\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;ig_rid=cf671e5c-1769-42a4-9600-a946524a18ad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">claiming<\/a> Baden served as the medical examiner for Petito\u2019s case and performed her autopsy. It includes images of articles about Baden and other high-profile deaths.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve not followed the Gabby Petito case, but it\u2019s strange to me that she had the same medical examiner as JFK, George Floyd, Epstein, MLK and Phil Spector,\u201d reads text inside the screen grab. \u201cGuy must love the spotlight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But, contrary to the post\u2019s claim, Baden did not perform Petito\u2019s autopsy. It was conducted by Teton County Coroner Brent Blue, who ruled her death a homicide but did not disclose her cause of death, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/gabby-petito-body-found-wyoming-confirmed-ruled-homicide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CBS News<\/a> reported. The FBI\u2019s Denver division also said <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FBIDenver\/status\/1440421552042897415\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">on Twitter<\/a> that Blue performed Petito\u2019s autopsy.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" readability=\"10.414414414414\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Teton County Coroner Dr. Brent Blue confirmed the remains are those of Gabrielle Venora Petito, date of birth March 19, 1999. The cause of death remains pending final autopsy results.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Baden <a href=\"https:\/\/video.foxnews.com\/v\/6273661176001#sp=show-clips\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">has<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/video.foxnews.com\/v\/6273392680001#sp=show-clips\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">made<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/video.foxnews.com\/v\/6273566023001#sp=show-clips\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">appearances<\/a> on Fox News as a medical expert to provide commentary on Petito\u2019s case. For instance, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/gabby-petito-autopsy-dr-michael-baden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">explained<\/a> Sept. 20 on \u201cFox and Friends\u201d what Petito\u2019s autopsy could potentially reveal. At no point did he say he was involved in the autopsy.<\/p>\n<p>He said the autopsy \u201cshould tell us whether there were any signs of violence or if possibly the death is natural or if they need to do toxicology to find out if there\u2019s any medication or drugs involved,\u201d according to a transcript of his \u201cFox &amp; Friends\u201d appearance on Sept. 20.<\/p>\n<p>The image on Instagram also gets Baden\u2019s involvement in other high profile cases wrong. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2021\/09\/24\/fact-check-member-fda-vaccine-advisory-panel-killing-people-saving-covid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Did A Member Of The FDA Vaccine Advisory Panel Say, \u2018We Are Killing More People Than We Are Saving With The Shots\u2019?)&nbsp;<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While Baden did attend deceased convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein\u2019s autopsy as an independent observer, he did not perform it himself, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/10\/30\/nyregion\/jeffrey-epstein-homicide-autopsy-michael-baden.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The New York Times<\/a>. He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/storyline\/michael-brown-shooting\/who-dr-michael-baden-coroner-examined-michael-brown-n183516\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">also testified<\/a> at Phil Spector\u2019s 2007 trial but, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/la-xpm-2007-may-30-me-spector30-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Los Angeles Times<\/a>, was not the one who performed the autopsy on the victim in that case.<\/p>\n<p>Documents from the National Archives <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archives.gov\/files\/research\/jfk\/warren-commission-report\/appendix-09.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">show<\/a> President John F. Kennedy\u2019s autopsy was conducted by military doctors, while Martin Luther King Jr\u2019s was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archives.gov\/research\/jfk\/select-committee-report\/part-2a.html#committee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">performed<\/a> by Shelby County medical examiner Dr. Jerry T. Francisco. Baden did serve as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryferrell.org\/showDoc.html?docId=82#relPageId=83\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">top pathologist<\/a> on the House Select Committee on Assassinations, which probed King\u2019s and Kennedy\u2019s deaths.<\/p>\n<p>Baden conducted an independent autopsy of George Floyd, a black man who died after a then-Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck for over eight minutes, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/independent-autopsy-george-floyd-findings-announced\/story?id=70994827\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ABC News<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A viral Instagram post claims former New York City chief medical examiner Dr. Michael Baden performed Gabby Petito\u2019s autopsy.
