Jacobson, a professor at Cornell Law, who has been the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/cornell-students-now-boycotting-course-taught-by-law-professor-critical-of-black-lives-matter-tactics\">attempted victim<\/a> of cancel culture himself.<\/p>\n<p>In June 2020, not long after Floyd\u2019s death, a group of students sent an email to UCLA accounting professor Gordon Klein, asking him to institute a \u201c\u2018no-harm\u2019 final exam that could only benefit students\u2019 grades, and for shortened exams and extended deadlines for final assignments and projects,\u201d Inside Higher Ed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/2020\/06\/04\/professor-resigns-after-criticizing-protesters-and-another-faces-calls-his\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As The Daily Wire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/ucla-students-want-two-professors-fired-because-they-didnt-accommodate-student-feelings\">reported<\/a>, the students requested all of these accommodations due to recent \u201ctraumas, we have been placed in a position where we much choose between actively supporting our black classmates or focusing on finishing up our spring quarter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe that remaining neutral in times of injustice brings power to the oppressor and therefore staying silent is not an option,\u201d the students added.<\/p>\n<p>The students insisted they did not make the request as \u201ca joint effort to get finals canceled for non-black students,\u201d but rather to \u201cask that you exercise compassion and leniency with black students in our major.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The students were using the May 25 death of Floyd and the resulting riots across the country to get leniency in class. Professor Klein did not accept their arguments and responded in an email that gained him the ire of students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThanks for your suggestion in your email below that I give black students special treatment, given the tragedy in Minnesota,\u201d Klein wrote back to the students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you know the names of the classmates that are black?\u201d he asked them. \u201cHow can I identify them since we\u2019ve been having online classes only?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Klein went on to ask about students who \u201cmay be of mixed parentage, such as half black-half Asian?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you suggest I do with respect to them? A full concession or just half?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p>Klein also suggested \u201ca white student from [Minneapolis] might be possibly even more devastated by this, especially because some might think that they\u2019re racist even if they are not. My TA is from Minneapolis, so if you don\u2019t know, I can probably ask her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Klein ended his email with a quote from Martin Luther King Jr. about not evaluating people based on the color of their skin.<\/p>\n<p>Klein was eventually suspended and denounced by UCLA. It later reinstated him, but as Jacobson noted, \u201cnot before his reputation and career were severely damaged.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Klein is now suing, alleging he was punished for treating students equally, as required by California law. He also alleges that UCLA\u2019s Anderson School of Management disregarded a broader UCLA directive <em>not<\/em> to punish him over student complains.
