Bush, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/04\/18\/us\/18cnd-scotus.html\">was upheld<\/a> by the U.S. Supreme Court as constitutional in 2007. &nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/02\/23\/becerra-abortion-romney-partial-birth-california-biden\/\">(RELATED: Republican Senators Push Biden Nominee Becerra On His Abortion Record)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Gawande also describes a partial birth abortion in gruesome detail in his 1998 op-ed, acknowledging that late-term abortions are \u201cdisturbing\u201d since the unborn baby is \u201d&nbsp;big now\u2013like a fully formed child.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPartial-birth abortion is, if anything, less grotesque,\u201d he wrote, comparing partial birth abortion to Dilation and Evacuation procedures. \u201cThe fetus is delivered feet first. To get the large head out, the doctor cuts open a hole at the base of the fetus\u2019s skull and inserts tubing to suck out the brain, which collapses the skull.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Atul_Gawande\/status\/1443600956017545222\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nominee\u2019s<\/a> frankness in discussing partial birth abortion is reminiscent of a very different period in the fight over abortion \u2014 advocates of the past few years are much less likely to discuss abortion techniques with such candor.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7293119\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" readability=\"36\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-7293119\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">NEW YORK, NY \u2013 OCTOBER 01: The National speaks with Atul Gawande on stage during The 2011 New Yorker Festival: In Conversation With The National at Acura at SIR Stage37 on October 1, 2011 in New York City. (Photo by Neilson Barnard\/Getty Images for The New Yorker)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Gawande suggested that if partial-birth abortions are \u201ctoo gruesome to allow,\u201d perhaps dilation and evacuation abortions (in which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/gpr\/2017\/02\/de-abortion-bans-implications-banning-most-common-second-trimester-procedure\">the unborn baby is vacuumed<\/a> out of the mother\u2019s womb) are also too gruesome to allow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd that\u2019s the inevitable next target for pro-life advocates,\u201d he wrote. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/10\/xavier-becerra-steve-daines-mike-braun-department-of-health-and-human-services-roe-v-wade\/\">(RELATED: Biden Nominee Once Argued Partial Birth Abortion Should Not Be Banned Simply Because Of \u2018Grossness\u2019)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo of my obstetrician friends, both strongly pro-choice, told me that, even when it is a mother\u2019s life at stake and abortion is absolutely necessary, doing the D and E feels \u2018horrible,&#8217;\u201d the Biden nominee wrote. \u201cWe imagine, as we look in the fetus\u2019s eyes, that there is someone in there. And if there were, any elective late abortion\u2013even by induction\u2013would be wrong, though D and E and partial-birth abortion would seem especially cruel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gawande questioned whether there is \u201csomeone in there,\u201d noting that Roe v. Even for viable anencephalics, there\u2019s no purpose to providing treatment. We let them die.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cq-article-5d81aa19e7e7489f8b00d3f3afa449c1-component-15@published\" data-word-count=\"46\">\u201cWhether the fetus is in the womb or out, big or small, does not matter, either,\u201d he added. \u201cBut the size and appearance of the late-term fetus make us imagine that it has become a sensate, aware creature\u2013and makes many supporters of first-trimester abortion uncomfortable with later-term ones.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cq-article-5d81aa19e7e7489f8b00d3f3afa449c1-component-15@published\" data-word-count=\"46\">Gawande said that the unborn baby \u201cdoes become a distinctly different being\u201d somewhere between 22 and 25 weeks. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/05\/12\/xavier-becerra-roe-v-wade-partial-birth-abortion\/\">(RELATED: Biden\u2019s HHS Secretary Falsely Says There Is \u2018No Law\u2019 Dealing Specifically With Partial Birth Abortion)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cq-article-5d81aa19e7e7489f8b00d3f3afa449c1-component-15@published\" data-word-count=\"46\">\u201cWe need more in-depth study to identify this critical juncture,\u201d he wrote. \u201cThat\u2019s because most people would feel that it is wrong to do elective abortions\u2013abortions when the health of the mother is not at risk and the fetus is not seriously deformed\u2013beyond that point. The current debate glosses over these issues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cq-article-5d81aa19e7e7489f8b00d3f3afa449c1-component-15@published\" data-word-count=\"46\">\u201cThere\u2019s no good reason to single out partial-birth abortion\u2013or any technique,\u201d he concluded. \u201cFrom the pro-lifers\u2019 standpoint, banning it will not actually save a single fetus.
