If you don\u2019t, fine. Don\u2019t get up and tell jokes then.\u201d\u2018<\/p>\n<p>Leno was criticized earlier this year for jokes about Asians he told in the past, prompting him to apologize.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the time I did those jokes, I genuinely thought them to be harmless,\u201d Leno said in a statement, according to Variety. \u201cI was making fun of our enemy North Korea, and like most jokes, there was a ring of truth to them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the time, there was a prevailing attitude that some group is always complaining about something, so don\u2019t worry about it. Whenever we received a complaint, there would be two sides to the discussion: Either \u2018We need to deal with this\u2019 or \u2018Screw \u2018em if they can\u2019t take a joke.\u2019 Too many times I sided with the latter even when in my heart I knew it was wrong,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am issuing this apology,\u201d Leno added. \u201cI do not consider this particular case to be another example of cancel culture but a legitimate wrong that was done on my part. MANAA has been very gracious in accepting my apology. I hope that the Asian American community will be able to accept it as well, and I hope I can live up to their expectations in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But in May, comedian and actor Seth Rogen dismissed the risks posed to comedians by \u201ccancel culture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are certain jokes that for sure have not aged well, but I think that\u2019s the nature of comedy,\u201d Rogan said in an interview with \u201cGood Morning Britain.\u201d \u201cI think conceptually those movies are sound, and I think there\u2019s a reason they\u2019ve lasted as far as people still watching and enjoying them today. Jokes are not things that necessarily are built to last.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo me when I see comedians complaining about this kind of thing, I don\u2019t understand what they\u2019re complaining about. If you\u2019ve made a joke that\u2019s aged terribly, accept it.
