His opponent, Republican candidate Glenn Youngkin, argued during the debate that local school districts should include parents in decisions regarding the educational content taught to their children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn regard to our kids in schools, we are called for everyone to love everyone,\u201d Youngkin said. \u201cAnd I agree with your conclusion, Terry [McAuliffe], that we should let local school districts actually make these decisions. But we must ask them to include concepts of safety and privacy and respect in the discussion and we must ask that they include parents in the dialogue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not gonna let parents come into schools and actually take books out and make their own decisions,\u201d McAuliffe replied. \u201cI stopped the bill that I don\u2019t think parents should be telling schools what they should teach.\u201d He explained that he supports parents having the right to veto books rather than make decisions for the schools on which books are placed in school libraries.<\/p>\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"WATCH LIVE: Terry McAuliffe, Glenn Youngkin square off in final gubernatorial debate\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/V1blLxWVcPY?start=2117&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p>McAuliffe vetoed a bill, known as the \u201cBeloved\u201d bill in 2016 that would have allowed parents to block their childrens\u2019 exposure to sexually explicit books in schools, the Washington Post previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/virginia-politics\/mcauliffe-vetoes-bill-that-would-have-allowed-parents-to-block-sexually-explicit-books-in-school\/2016\/04\/04\/8b969316-fa75-11e5-886f-a037dba38301_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a>. The legislation would have required teachers to inform parents of any \u201csexually explicit material\u201d being presented in the classroom and give them the option to have their child opt out of the lesson. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/09\/07\/virginia-abortion-mcauliffe-youngkin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: As Virginia Governor Race Draws To A Close, McAuliffe Will Not Name One Abortion Restriction He Supports)&nbsp;<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Youngkin criticized McAuliffe\u2019s veto of the bill during his time as governor, arguing that \u201cparents should be in charge of their kid\u2019s education.\u201d The Republican candidate mentioned parents\u2019 uproar this past week over <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/09\/24\/fairfax-county-public-school-mother-child-porn-pedophilia-books-library\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fairfax County High School<\/a> allegedly presenting \u201csexually explicit\u201d material in the library without <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/04\/21\/doug-ducey-vetoes-bill-parental-consent-students-lgbtq\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">parental consent<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The school system removed the books \u201cGender Queer\u201d by Maia Kobabe and \u201cLawn Boy\u201d by Jonathon Evison from the high school library Friday, <a href=\"https:\/\/wtop.com\/fairfax-county\/2021\/09\/fairfax-county-schools-pulls-2-books-with-graphic-sex-from-libraries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according<\/a> to WTOP News.
