The COVID vaccine.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Whether we like it or not, the question of \u201cAre you vaccinated\u201d is top of mind for many, and professional athletes are not immune to it.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving missed media day due to New York\u2019s vaccination policy, Bradley Beal had a lengthy conversation about his decision to not take the shot, and Golden State Warriors guard Andrew Wiggins got testy with the media as he avoided discussing his beliefs on the issue.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It\u2019s been reported that nearly 90% of NBA players are vaccinated, and the league has required that referees and any staff that member that works within 15 feet of players be fully vaccinated.&nbsp;<\/span><span>The only reason the players are not required to be fully vaccinated is due to their strong union, the NBA Players Association, which drew a line in the sand for its members.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But not all staffers are pleased with players who have opted out of the shot.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cEveryone who is vaccinated should be pissed at those who aren\u2019t,\u201d a veteran assistant coach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/32293462\/vaccinated-nba-staffers-concerned-health-risks-being-exposed-unvaccinated-players-season-approaches\">told<\/a><\/span><span>&nbsp;ESPN, \u201cNot requiring NBA players to be vaccinated is horse s\u2014t.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Multiple staff members told ESPN that they are concerned about obtaining a breakthrough case and passing the illness onto their family members.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThey need to hold the players to the same standards they hold us,\u201d a strength and conditioning coach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/32293462\/vaccinated-nba-staffers-concerned-health-risks-being-exposed-unvaccinated-players-season-approaches\">said<\/a>. \u201cThis is a disease that doesn\u2019t differentiate between a player and a staff member.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cSay you have a small child with asthma, and you\u2019re doing everything you can, but you bring something home to your family and children of a certain age aren\u2019t able to be vaccinated yet,\u201d a head athletic trainer told ESPN. \u201cIt\u2019s real. It\u2019s a real thing. Breakthrough infections are a real thing.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>If staffers are concerned, it would be a logical assumption to think that players are also worried about working next to someone who has chosen to remain unvaccinated.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But Andre Iguodala of the Warriors didn\u2019t seem particularly concerned about playing next to Wiggins, who appears to be unvaccinated.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI think we all have to do our homework a little bit better. That\u2019s for all of us,\u201d Iguodala said on Monday. \u201cI\u2019ve been upset reading about Andrew Wiggins because it\u2019s painting the wrong picture. We\u2019re in a day and age now where perception can become reality. And the perception that\u2019s going on about him is hurting his value and ultimately can affect the wealth that he accumulates, which is totally unfair.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIf you do your homework the way it should be done, you understand there\u2019s some people who have an excuse and there\u2019s people who have actual values. He\u2019s a guy that has values, and he\u2019s the type of guy I\u2019ll stand by. He\u2019s the kind of guy I\u2019ll risk being around the situation. I\u2019m vaccinated and I have an understanding about this, and he has a different understanding, but his understanding is something that I truly respect, and I have a value for how he sees life. He\u2019s the type of guy that I support the whole way. Hopefully we can find a solution.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Last week, the NBA announced that Wiggins\u2019s request for a religious exemption from the vaccine was denied.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe NBA has reviewed and denied Andrew Wiggins\u2019 request for [a] religious exemption from the San Francisco Department of Public Health\u2019s order requiring COVID-19 vaccination for all participants age 12 and older at large indoor events,\u201d the league said in a statement. \u201cWiggins will not be able to play in Warriors home games until he fulfills the city\u2019s vaccination requirements.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The NBA season tips off October 19th.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i>Joe Morgan is the Sports Reporter for The Daily Wire.
