Since then, the government has been funding federal programs through what it calls \u201cextraordinary measures.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/business-janet-yellen-ac00e6452c48fba9a2bd21d9f633e961\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> the government would run out of money sometime in October without a new spending bill.<\/span><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Congressional Republicans have said they would support a clean bill to fund the government, but Democrats paired government funding with a provision to raise the debt ceiling, which led Republicans to kill the bill on a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-09-27\/senate-republicans-block-bill-to-raise-debt-cap-avert-shutdown\"><span>party-line<\/span><\/a><span> vote, 48-50, on Monday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Remember: <\/b><span>If the debt ceiling isn\u2019t raised this week, nothing will happen right away. After the Treasury runs out of cash-on-hand, the federal government would still collect <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/no-the-us-will-not-default-on-its-debt-no-matter-what-2015-10-20\"><span>more than enough<\/span><\/a><span> tax receipts to make the interest payments on the national debt, as well as Social Security, Medicare, and many other government programs. However, it could result in freezing the salaries of some federal employees and putting others on furlough.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Two \u2018Infrastructure\u2019 Bills<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) wants to advance two bills this week.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>T<\/span><span>he first is the president\u2019s $3.5 trillion Build Back Better Act, which contains social policies like government-funded preschool and \u2018free\u2019 community college.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The second bill is the<\/span><span> trillion-dollar <\/span><span>Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which is largely traditional infrastructure.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The Debate<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>House Progressive Caucus chair, Representative Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), said its members will vote against the infrastructure bill unless the House first votes on the president\u2019s bill to expand government programs. As of Monday, health workers at all hospitals and nursing homes in New York must have at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine in order to keep their jobs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Tens of thousands of workers still haven\u2019t been vaccinated, meaning New York could face mass firings leaving health care facilities understaffed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The state labor department said health workers fired for refusing to get vaccinated will not be able to collect unemployment insurance unless they had a medical exemption.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The Response<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>On Saturday, <\/span><span>New York Governor Kathy Hochul (D) <\/span><span>tried to prepare for a staffing emergency by releasing a plan to potentially <\/span><span>deploy medically trained National Guard members to replace unvaccinated workers.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Hochul said she may also call in recent medical graduates, retirees, out-of-state workers, or foreign workers to help.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The Numbers<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>As of last week, 85% of hospital workers in New York were fully vaccinated, while around 15% were not fully vaccinated.
