Sean Patrick Maloney&#8217;s (D., N.Y.) 18th Congressional District boundaries have canceled or scaled back in-person classes due to a bus driver shortage, the <\/span><i><span>Times Herald-Record<\/span><\/i><span> reported in September. The New York School Bus Contractors Association (NYSBCA) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysbca.com\/News\/10955487\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>attributed<\/span><\/a><span> the problem in part to President Joe Biden&#8217;s $1.9 trillion &#8220;American Rescue Plan,&#8221; which Maloney said would &#8220;defeat the pandemic&#8221; and &#8220;get kids back in school.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;Enhanced federal unemployment benefits and the child tax credit are compounding the problem,&#8221; NYSBCA executive director Tammy Mortier told the <\/span><i><span>Times Union<\/span><\/i><span> in August. &#8220;When unemployment runs out in September, we hope to see some of them coming back.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Maloney, who chairs the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, has acknowledged that such hiring problems could spell trouble for his party in 2022. During a closed-door lunch in late July, Maloney <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2021\/08\/03\/sean-patrick-maloney-democrats-house-majority-502265\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>told<\/span><\/a><span> fellow House Democrats they were on track to lose the midterms thanks in part to &#8220;inflation and the hiring shortage affecting low-wage segments of the economy.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Neither Maloney nor the DCCC returned requests for comment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Maloney heaped praise on Biden&#8217;s stimulus bill before and after Democrats passed the $1.9 trillion piece of legislation. In February, Maloney <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepSeanMaloney\/status\/1364363359383085059\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> the bill would &#8220;honor the lives of every single American who has died from this pandemic.&#8221; He later <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepSeanMaloney\/status\/1369777587929554946\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>called<\/span><\/a><span> the legislation &#8220;a game changer&#8221; and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepSeanMaloney\/status\/1370479922662232072\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> it <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepSeanMaloney\/status\/1371568582245584900\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">would<\/a> &#8220;crush this virus,&#8221; &#8220;jump-start our economy,&#8221; and get America &#8220;back to normal.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Mortier, however, is far from the only local leader to malign the bill&#8217;s expanded unemployment benefits and child tax credit payments. Swing-district House Democrats notably <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/coronavirus\/swing-district-dems-break-from-biden-on-increased-unemployment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>broke from Biden<\/span><\/a><span> on the legislation after U.S. job openings reached a record high in April. Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D., Mich.) admitted that the boosted payments were inhibiting business owners from filling vacancies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;Every single business owner that I know that has reached out to me has talked about this as their number one issue,&#8221; Slotkin <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/coronavirus\/swing-district-dems-break-from-biden-on-increased-unemployment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> in May after a constituent expressed concern over &#8220;boosted federal unemployment.&#8221; &#8220;They want to make money, they want to be open, but they&#8217;re having a problem getting people.&#8221; Rep. John Garamendi (D., Calif.) echoed her concerns, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/coronavirus\/swing-district-dems-break-from-biden-on-increased-unemployment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>noting<\/span><\/a><span> &#8220;there&#8217;s a lot of discussion among the business community that the unemployment insurance system is keeping people from wanting to go back to work.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to the <\/span><i><span>Herald-Record<\/span><\/i><span>, &#8220;many schools&#8221; in Maloney&#8217;s district are &#8220;dealing with bus delays, uncovered routes, a lack of monitors on vehicles for special needs students, [and] adjustments to sports and extra-curricular schedules.&#8221; The shortages <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.recordonline.com\/story\/news\/2021\/09\/21\/schools-understaffed-instructional-and-non-academic-positions\/8376171002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>prompted<\/span><\/a><span> the Pine Bush Central School District to close for two days. The Newburgh Enlarged City School District, meanwhile, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.recordonline.com\/story\/news\/education\/2021\/09\/16\/newburgh-virtual-school-option-busing-covid\/8341902002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>ordered<\/span><\/a><span> its superintendent to craft a remote-learning option in response to busing issues. Both Pine Bush and Newburgh are located in Maloney&#8217;s district.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Neither school district returned requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p><span>Maloney became DCCC chair in January, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/seanmaloney.house.gov\/media-center\/press-releases\/maloney-elected-chair-of-the-democratic-congressional-campaign-committee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>pledging<\/span><\/a><span> to &#8220;work every day to \u2026 expand our majority.&#8221; But his tenure as House Democrats&#8217; campaign chief has been defined by blunders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In April, Maloney&#8217;s staff greenlit $5,000 wire transfers from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D., N.Y.) to vulnerable House Democrats, some of whom returned the money over political concerns. Days later, <\/span><i><span>Business Insider<\/span><\/i> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/congress-stocks-sean-patrick-maloney-rick-allen-2021-4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>reported<\/span><\/a><span> Maloney failed to disclose more than $11,000 in stock sales from 2020. And in August, Maloney defied State Department guidelines to travel to France, where he <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/politics\/maloney-french-scandal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>partied maskless<\/span><\/a><span> at a billionaire&#8217;s estate. The DCCC <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docquery.fec.gov\/pdf\/860\/202108209466487860\/202108209466487860.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>paid<\/span><\/a><span> $813 for an Air France plane ticket just weeks before the trip.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Biden Administration Local officials blame school cancellations on enhanced unemployment benefits  Rep.
