Liz Cheney of Wyoming said Sunday that she was wrong for opposing same-sex marriage eight years ago, a position that drove a wedge between her and her sister, who is gay, and her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was wrong. I was wrong,\u201d Cheney <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/liz-cheney-donald-trump-wyoming-60-minutes-2021-09-26\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told<\/a> CBS News\u2019 Lesley Stahl during a \u201c60 Minutes\u201d profile. \u201cI love my sister very much. I love her family very much. And I was wrong. It\u2019s a very personal issue and very personal for my family. I believe that my dad was right. She then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/blogs\/politico-now\/2013\/11\/liz-cheney-i-disagree-with-my-sister-on-gay-marriage-177682\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a> that while she loved her family and sister \u201cvery much,\u201d saying same-sex marriage is \u201cjust an issue on which we disagree.\u201d&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/09\/22\/george-w-bush-fundraiser-liz-cheney-donald-trump-harriet-hageman\/\">(RELATED: George Bush Headlining Fundraiser For Liz Cheney)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But Cheney\u2019s sister, Mary, <a href=\"https:\/\/thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com\/2013\/11\/17\/within-cheney-family-a-dispute-over-gay-marriage\/?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">replied<\/a> directly on Facebook. \u201cLiz \u2013 this isn\u2019t just an issue on which we disagree you\u2019re just wrong \u2013 and on the wrong side of history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Four years earlier, Dick Cheney had publicly come out in <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2013\/02\/27\/prominent-conservatives-defend-gay-marriage-before-supreme-court\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">support<\/a> of same-sex marriage, <a href=\"https:\/\/thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com\/2009\/06\/01\/cheney-reasserts-stance-on-gay-marriages\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">saying<\/a> that, \u201cI think, you know, freedom means freedom for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think people ought to be free to enter into any kind of union they wish, any kind of arrangement they wish,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Cheney echoed her father Sunday, telling Stahl that \u201cfreedom means freedom for everybody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an issue that we have to recognize, you know, as human beings, that we need to work against discrimination of all kinds in our country, in our state,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Content created by The Daily Caller News Foundation is available without charge to any eligible news publisher that can provide a large audience.
