Though some Republicans expressed reservations about her willingness to interfere in the economy, others \u2014 such as Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) \u2014 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/big-tech-adversary-poised-to-take-assertive-ftc-antitrust-role-11621785601?mod=article_inline\"><span>approved<\/span><\/a><span> her hawkish approach toward \u201cBig Tech\u201d firms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Indeed, Khan\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/system\/files\/documents\/public_statements\/1596664\/agency_priorities_memo_from_chair_lina_m_khan_9-22-21.pdf\"><span>memo<\/span><\/a><span> emphasized the need to foster competitive marketplaces:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"18\">\n<p><i><span>First, we need to address rampant consolidation and the dominance that it has enabled across markets. This will require both finding ways to strengthen our merger enforcement work as well as generally focusing our resources on scrutinizing dominant firms, where lack of competition makes unlawful conduct more likely.&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>Growing evidence suggests that market power now looks to be an increasingly systemic problem across the economy, so we should generally focus our resources on the most significant actors, where our enforcement actions can have the greatest impact on the everyday lives of Americans. Given the ongoing merger surge, there is a real risk that markets will become only more consolidated absent our vigilance and assertive posture.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>Khan likewise said that the agency needs to address dominant intermediaries and extractive business models:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"13\">\n<p><i><span>Research documents how gatekeepers and dominant middlemen across the economy have been able to use their critical market position to hike fees, dictate terms, and protect and extend their market power. Business models that centralize control and profits while outsourcing risk, liability, and costs also warrant particular scrutiny, given that deeply asymmetric relationships between the controlling firm and dependent entities can be ripe for abuse.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have been increasingly wary of monopolies \u2014 especially those in the technology sector. While Republicans see the policies of \u201cBig Tech\u201d companies like Apple, Google, Amazon, and Facebook as a threat to free expression, Democrats largely emphasize the companies\u2019 workforce practices and tax strategies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Accordingly, several members of the House \u2014 including Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) and Rep. Ken Buck (R-CO) \u2014 proposed a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/bipartisan-antitrust-bills-would-break-up-amazon-google-apple-facebook\"><span>package<\/span><\/a><span> of five bills that would break up the aforementioned firms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cNot only is self-regulation by Big Tech patently ineffective, but it also comes at the direct expense of workers, consumers, small businesses, our local communities, and the free press,\u201d said Rep. Jayapal \u2014 who helps to lead the House Antitrust Subcommittee \u2014 in a press release. \u201cFrom Amazon and Facebook to Google and Apple, it is clear that these unregulated tech giants have become too big to care and too powerful to ever put people over profits.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Buck added that \u201cBig Tech has abused its dominance in the marketplace to crush competitors, censor speech, and control how we see and understand the world.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In July, President Biden <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/capitalism-without-competition-isnt-capitalism-its-exploitation-biden-signs-another-executive-order-targeting-big-tech\"><span>signed<\/span><\/a><span> the \u201cExecutive Order on Promoting Competition in the American Economy.\u201d The measure directed the Federal Communications Commission to restrict early termination fees for broadband providers and to revisit net neutrality rules amended under the Trump administration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe heart of American capitalism is a simple idea: Open and fair competition,\u201d said Biden. \u201cThat means that if your companies want to win your business, they have to go out and they have to up their game.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
