He has denied he made the remark.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The image includes a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nobelprize.org\/prizes\/medicine\/2015\/campbell\/facts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">picture<\/a> of Campbell along with text that reads, \u201cMy name is William Campbell, in 2015 I won the Noble prize in medicine for the discovery of Ivermectin. It cures many diseases including COVID-19. The fake news and big pharma want you to live in fear. The pair, along with scientist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nobelprize.org\/prizes\/medicine\/2015\/tu\/facts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tu Youyou<\/a>, won a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drew.edu\/news\/2015\/10\/05\/drews-william-campbell-wins-nobel-prize-in-medicine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nobel Prize<\/a> in Physiology or Medicine in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nobelprize.org\/prizes\/medicine\/2015\/omura\/facts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2015<\/a> for discovering it.<\/p>\n<p>There is, however, no evidence that Campbell made the statement attributed to him in the post. Campbell himself denied he said the quote in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drew.edu\/stories\/2021\/09\/09\/drew-university-nobel-prize-winner-refutes-ivermectin-meme\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">statement<\/a> he released via Drew University addressing the same image when it was shared on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI utterly despise and deny the remarks attributed to me on social media on September&nbsp; 8, 2021,\u201d reads the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drew.edu\/stories\/2021\/09\/09\/drew-university-nobel-prize-winner-refutes-ivermectin-meme\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">statement<\/a>. \u201cI reject both the substance and the tone of the remarks, and resent their presentation as a direct quotation. The tweet in question was not concerned with science. I am a biologist with no claim to expertise in the clinical evaluation of drugs against viral infections. Thus, I have not taken a stand in support of, or against, the efficacy of ivermectin against COVID-19.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In April 2020, Campbell <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ria.ie\/news\/publications-covid-19-research-response\/does-ivermectin-kill-covid-19-virus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told<\/a> the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ria.ie\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Royal Irish Academy<\/a>, an academic body that promotes and supports science in Ireland, that the probability of ivermectin being used to kill the COVID-19 virus \u201cmust be considered low.\u201d <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2021\/09\/13\/fact-check-new-study-ivermectin-sterility-85-percent-men\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Image Claims A \u2018New\u2019 Study Found Ivermectin Causes Sterility in 85% Of Men)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While some doctors have, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/why-ivermectin-being-used-treat-covid-2-doctors-leading-charge-2021-9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Business Insider<\/a>, alleged ivermectin can be used to treat COVID-19, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/consumers\/consumer-updates\/why-you-should-not-use-ivermectin-treat-or-prevent-covid-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FDA<\/a> has not approved or authorized the drug for use in preventing or treating COVID-19 in humans or animals.
