Adam Smith (D-WA) to share a story found in the book on Sunday\u2019s episode of \u201cReliable Sources.\u201d In \u201cPeril,\u201d Woodward relates that Congressman Smith found himself on a plane ride with several people who had attended the \u201cStop the Steal\u201d rally on January 6.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m imagining you slinking down in your seat just hoping that none of these rioters recognize you,\u201d Stelter enthused, seeming to revel in the imagined danger. \u201cIs that what happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, no,\u201d Congressman Smith replied. \u201cI did not fear them in any way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Seemingly taken aback, Stelter read the relevant passage out of the book: \u201cUgly talk about conspiracies to steal the election filled the plane. So did chatter about QAnon,\u201d and \u201cSeveral passengers also mentioned 6MWE,\u201d a reference to Holocaust victims.<\/p>\n<p>After reading the passage word-for-word, Stelter asked, \u201cIs that accurate?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. And that\u2019s one of the unfortunate aspects of this,\u201d Rep. Smith answered. \u201cThe people on the plane didn\u2019t say anything racist or anti-Semitic. \u2026 I did not hear anything from the people on the plane about racism or anti-Semitism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh,\u201d Stelter said several times, his body shrugging.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Smith said the xenophobic language came from things he \u201csaw and heard on January 6th at the Capitol and in the couple of days leading up to it.\u201d But \u201cwhen I spoke to Mr. Woodward, we spoke about what I heard on the plane\u201d and what happened at the Capitol.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think Mr. Woodward conflated the two,\u201d Rep. Smith said.<\/p>\n<p>Stelter said the congressman\u2019s version of events seemed \u201ccurious,\u201d as he pulled out a physical copy of Woodward\u2019s book and began to read aloud. \u201cI just pulled it back up in the book, page 261,\u201d he said. \u201c\u2018I just had the most unbelievable, unsettling experience,\u2019 Smith said in a phone call on January 8th to Chairman Milley,\u201d Stelter read verbatim.<\/p>\n<p>He seemed crestfallen that the events did not occur as he imagined, based on Woodward\u2019s alleged misreporting. \u201cAs the reader, you\u2019re thinking, wow, you know, you\u2019re in on this phone call,\u201d Stelter said. He verified with Smith that \u201cyou told Woodward about your phone call and you\u2019re saying a little bit of it was conflated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah,\u201d Smith said.<\/p>\n<p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/youtube.com\/watch?v=Q7OmpMeEq74&#038;start=1058&#038;feature=oembed\">https:\/\/youtube.com\/watch?v=Q7OmpMeEq74&amp;start=1058&amp;feature=oembed<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>Stelter apparently made little progress in holding Woodward accountable by Monday, when he <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/brianstelter\/status\/1439966194686173187\">wrote<\/a>, \u201cA spokesperson for Woodward did not immediately respond to a request for comment.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"6.3318584070796\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Rep. Here&#8217;s my interview with Smith: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/BarskT4yaW\">https:\/\/t.co\/BarskT4yaW<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/CMRx30qhe4\">pic.twitter.com\/CMRx30qhe4<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Brian Stelter (@brianstelter) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/brianstelter\/status\/1439966194686173187?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 20, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cPeril\u201d has catapulted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/episode\/friday-september-17-2021-1\">into the national conversation<\/a> because it contains one of the most explosive stories of this month \u2014 allegations that General Mark Milley attempted to undermine outgoing President Donald Trump within his own administration and by contacting members of the Chinese military.<\/p>\n<p>According to Woodward, Milley so feared that President Trump would start a war with China that he reportedly called his counterpart in the People\u2019s Liberation Army, General Li Zuocheng, twice, going so far as to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/gen-milley-appearing-on-cnn-even-better-than-testifying-under-oath-chris-cuomo\">promise<\/a>&nbsp;the Chinese Communist general, \u201cIf we\u2019re going to attack, I\u2019m going to call you ahead of time. It\u2019s not going to be a surprise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Woodward also said that Milley gathered everyone involved in the nuclear launch process and made them review the process for a nuclear first strike, telling them not to act unless he was involved \u2014 although the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff is not part of the chain of command for a nuclear launch. \u201cLooking each in the eye, Milley asked the officers to affirm that they had understood, the authors write, in what he considered an \u2018oath,\u2019\u201d The Washington Post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2021\/09\/14\/peril-woodward-costa-trump-milley-china\/\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Milley has admitted making the phone calls and reviewing nuclear \u201cprotocol,\u201d but denies any wrongdoing. He will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armed-services.senate.gov\/press-releases\/sasc-announces-upcoming-afghanistan-oversight-hearings-\">testify<\/a> before the Senate Armed Services Committee on September 28.<\/p>\n<p>But doubts and controversies have surrounded Bob Woodward\u2019s reporting for decades, including his claim that former CIA Director William Casey <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2012\/04\/6-bob-woodward-controversies-075738\">admitted<\/a> he knew about the Iran-Contra Affair on his deathbed. (Relatives say Woodward was not present at Casey\u2019s deathbed, and guards were posted at the door.) Another former CIA director, George Tenet, said that Woodward wrenched a statement about a \u201cslam dunk case\u201d regarding Iraq out of context; it was not about the strength of the intelligence about whether Iraq possessed Weapons of Mass Destruction, but instead, Tenet had said it would be a \u201cslam dunk\u201d to make a public case to invade Iraq.<\/p>\n<p>Woodward also claimed President Ronald Reagan had a slow and difficult recovery after his attempted assassination in 1981; Reagan\u2019s former doctor disputes the allegation.<\/p>\n<p>Even Woodward\u2019s former editor at The Washington Post, Ben Bradlee, had doubts that Woodward accurately reported a few minor details of the Watergate story.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a residual fear in my soul that that isn\u2019t quite straight,\u201d Bradlee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2012\/04\/ny-mag-writer-calls-out-woodward-075744\">told<\/a> Barbara Feinman Todd, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/video\/?423681-1\/qa-barbara-feinman-todd\">helped<\/a> him write his memoirs, in 1990.<\/p>\n<p><em>The views expressed in this piece are the author\u2019s own and do not necessarily represent those of The Daily Wire<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
