The FDA disputed the claims he makes in the video.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The FDA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/advisory-committees\/advisory-committee-calendar\/vaccines-and-related-biological-products-advisory-committee-february-26-2021-meeting-announcement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vaccine and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee<\/a> on Sept. 17 recommended the authorization of booster shots of Pfizer-BioNTech\u2019s COVID-19 vaccine for people 65 or older and those at risk for severe illness, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2021\/09\/23\/world\/covid-delta-variant-vaccine#pfizer-booster-cdc-fda-authorizehttps:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2021\/09\/23\/world\/covid-delta-variant-vaccine#pfizer-booster-cdc-fda-authorize\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The New York Times<\/a>. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2021\/04\/27\/fact-check-cdc-refusing-vaccine-racism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Image Claims To Show A CDC Infographic Saying \u2018Refusing To Take The Vaccine Is A Form Of Racism\u2019)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Since the committee\u2019s Sept. 17 meeting, social media users have been sharing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/100071634666352\/videos\/1054470578623923\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">video clip<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WFph7-6t34Mhttps:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WFph7-6t34M\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">livestream<\/a> along with claims a member of the FDA advisory panel said, \u201cWe are killing more people than we are saving with the shots.\u201d In the video, a man can be heard making multiple claims, including that the <a href=\"https:\/\/vaers.hhs.gov\/about.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vaccine Adverse Effects Reporting System<\/a> (VAERS) significantly underreports deaths associated with COVID-19 vaccines and that the number of such deaths is actually close to 150,000.<\/p>\n<p>The man speaking in the video, however, is not a member of the FDA\u2019s Vaccine and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee. He <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/WFph7-6t34M?t=15614\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">identified himself<\/a> as Steven Kirsch, the executive director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.treatearly.org\/our-team\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">COVID Early Treatment Fund<\/a>, when he spoke during the public hearing portion of the advisory committee\u2019s meeting. His name <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/advisory-committees\/vaccines-and-related-biological-products-advisory-committee\/roster-vaccines-and-related-biological-products-advisory-committee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">does not appear<\/a> on the roster of committee\u2019s members available on the FDA\u2019s website.<\/p>\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee \u2013 9\/17\/2021\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WFph7-6t34M?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p>Kirsch \u201cis not, and has never been, employed by the FDA and is not a member of FDA\u2019s Vaccine and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee,\u201d an FDA spokesperson confirmed to Check Your Fact in an email. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2021\/05\/03\/fact-check-fda-not-authorize-approve-covid-19-vaccine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Will The FDA Not Authorize Or Approve Any COVID-19 Vaccine?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs with all of the participants during the open public hearing portion of the meeting, Mr. Kirsch submitted a request to speak per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/advisory-committees\/advisory-committee-calendar\/vaccines-and-related-biological-products-advisory-committee-september-17-2021-meeting-announcement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the meeting announcement<\/a>,\u201d the spokesperson went on to explain. \u201cThe open public hearing portion of the meeting is open to anyone who is interested and signed up per the meeting announcement. FDA does not screen remarks from speakers during the open public hearing portion of the meeting in advance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the FDA spokesperson said the \u201cstatements made by Mr. Kirsch during the open public hearing portion of the meeting were not based in science and go against FDA\u2019s public health mission.\u201d The agency \u201cstrongly disagrees with the analysis Mr. Kirsch put forth during the VRBPAC meeting, as we believe the data from VAERS that he referenced were not properly interpreted,\u201d according to the FDA spokesperson.<\/p>\n<p>The FDA \u201crequires healthcare providers to report any death after COVID-19 vaccination to VAERS, even if it\u2019s unclear whether the vaccine was the cause,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/vaccines\/safety\/adverse-events.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a> (CDC), which <a href=\"https:\/\/vaers.hhs.gov\/about.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">co-manages<\/a> VAERS. Between Dec. 14 last year and Sept. 20 this year, over 386 million COVID-19 vaccine doses were administered in the U.S., and VAERS received 7,899 reports of death among people who had received COVID-19 vaccines during that time frame, the CDC website states.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/vaccines\/safety\/adverse-events.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CDC website<\/a> notes that \u201creports of death after COVID-19 vaccination are rare\u201d and that \u201creports of adverse events to VAERS following vaccination, including deaths, do not necessarily mean that a vaccine caused a health problem.\u201d A review of \u201cavailable clinical information, including death certificates, autopsy, and medical records, has not established a causal link to COVID-19 vaccines,\u201d the FDA spokesperson told Check Your Fact.<\/p>\n<p>There is \u201cno evidence that deaths are underreported in VAERS by the factor claimed by Mr. Kirsch,\u201d the FDA spokesperson said, also going on to note that under-reporting is a \u201cwell-known limitation\u201d of passive surveillance systems but not to such a large degree. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2021\/05\/03\/fact-check-fda-not-authorize-approve-covid-19-vaccine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Will The FDA Not Authorize Or Approve Any COVID-19 Vaccine?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.centerforhealthsecurity.org\/our-people\/adalja\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr. Amesh Adalja<\/a>, senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, said to Check Your Fact the claim that vaccines kill more people than they save is \u201cbaseless.\u201d<u><\/u><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis claim is baseless and distorts data in order to spread fear about the vaccine,\u201d Adalja said. \u201cAny person who is intellectually honest can just open their eyes and see that this vaccine is saving lives in the absence of the vaccine is costing lives.
