It changed its prediction to a tossup in light of recent polls that show either a lead for Republican Glenn Youngkin or a narrow McAuliffe lead within a margin of error.<\/p>\n<p>One major reason for the shift, Cook political analyst Jessica Taylor <a href=\"https:\/\/cookpolitical.com\/analysis\/governors\/virginia-governor\/national-environment-sours-democrats-virginia-governor-moves\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> Friday, is Biden&#8217;s now-underwater approval rating. A Gallup poll released Wednesday <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/biden-administration\/poll-bidens-approval-rating-hits-all-time-low\/\">shows<\/a> that only 43 percent of nationwide voters approve of the president&#8217;s performance. A recent <em>Washington Post<\/em> poll <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/virginia-politics\/northam-virginia-governor-poll\/2021\/09\/20\/7ea7fa48-1a2a-11ec-8380-5fbadbc43ef8_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">found<\/a> that Biden&#8217;s numbers have similarly tanked in Virginia, a state he won easily in 2020, with a 51 percent disapproval rating.<\/p>\n<p>Cook Political Report editor Amy Walter <a href=\"https:\/\/cookpolitical.com\/analysis\/national\/national-politics\/competency-question\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> Thursday that voters have soured on Biden because they &#8220;don\u2019t see the \u2018return to normal'&#8221; the Democrat promised after former president Donald Trump&#8217;s four years in office.<\/p>\n<p>Biden &#8220;botched&#8221; the U.S. pullout from Afghanistan, is now facing &#8220;more chaos on the southern border,&#8221; and has left the country still &#8220;anxious and divided&#8221; over COVID-19, Walter noted.
