Federal courts charged Meng with financial fraud and trade espionage, which carries a prison sentence of up to 10 years.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">China, however, continues to imprison two Canadian nationals\u2014former diplomat Michael Kovrig and consultant Michael Spavor\u2014whom Chinese authorities detained only days after Meng&#8217;s arrest in 2018. Experts have speculated that Beijing used the two Canadians as a potential bargaining chip for Meng&#8217;s release, but Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has so far <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-trade-china-canada-idCAKBN23W2TC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ruled out<\/a> any potential exchange involving Meng and the two citizens. Former secretary of state Mike Pompeo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/world\/united-states-canada\/article\/3090145\/us-demands-china-release-canadians-detained-days\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">called<\/a> China&#8217;s charges against Kovrig and Spavor &#8220;groundless&#8221; and &#8220;politically motivated.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Meng was at the helm of Huawei, which has formed deep ties with the Chinese military and developed surveillance tools potentially used to spy on Uyghur Muslims, as it exploded in growth during the 2010s. Beijing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2018\/12\/09\/tech\/huawei-cfo-china-summons-ambassador\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">summoned<\/a> its American and Canadian ambassadors after Meng&#8217;s arrest, calling the charges &#8220;extremely vicious&#8221; and assuring &#8220;serious consequences&#8221; if Meng were not released.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>National Security Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou\u2019s release a major priority for Beijing  Huawei Technologies Co.
