Measles vaccines <a href=\"https:\/\/www.immunize.org\/laws\/mmr.asp\">are\u00a0required<\/a> for children in childcare or public schools in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a reason why we\u2019re not talking about measles today,\u201d Cardona added. \u201cIt was a required vaccination, and we put it behind us. So I do believe at this point we need to be moving forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Currently, only Pfizer\u2019s vaccine has been granted emergency use authorization for kids 12 years old and up. On Aug. 23, Pfizer\u2019s Comirnaty vaccine received full approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for 16 years old and older.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, Pfizer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pfizer.com\/news\/press-release\/press-release-detail\/pfizer-and-biontech-announce-positive-topline-results\">announced<\/a> that phase 2\/3 trial results showed that its vaccine was safe, well-tolerated among 5 to 11 years of age, and \u201cdemonstrating strong immune response.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some studies have found that children have a very low risk of severe illness, death, or contracting long-term complications from COVID-19. In July, researchers from the University of Liverpool, the University College of London, the University of York, and the University of Bristol <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/more-data-confirms-risk-of-covid-19-death-serious-illness-very-low-in-children_3896888.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">released a paper<\/a> that found that among 12 million children in the United Kingdom, only 25 died from COVID-19 directly.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellhealth.com\/children-long-covid-5197071\">separate\u00a0study<\/a> published in August\u00a0found that \u201clong COVID\u201d or lingering symptoms after a COVID-19 infection is less common among children than in adults. The researchers specifically analyzed data logged by parents or caregivers on behalf of children between the ages of five and 17.<\/p>\n<p>The study found that\u00a04.4 percent of children who tested positive and showed symptoms had symptoms lasting four weeks or longer, while 1.8 percent had symptoms lasting longer than eight weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Despite this, a number of schools across the United States have said they will\u00a0require students aged 12 and older to get vaccinated against COVID-19 to attend school.<\/p>\n<p>In California, the state\u2019s\u00a0top health official said Thursday that a statewide vaccine requirement for kids 12 and older <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/covid-19-vaccine-mandates-for-california-students-aged-12-and-up-being-considered-official_4013297.html\">could be forthcoming<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, the number of\u00a0eligible students receiving their first COVID-19 vaccine dose continues to slow down.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aap.org\/en\/pages\/2019-novel-coronavirus-covid-19-infections\/children-and-covid-19-vaccination-trends\/\">American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)<\/a> revealed on Sept. 15 that 273,000 children had received their first coronavirus vaccine dose in the prior week, marking the lowest level seen since the vaccine was first made available for those aged 12 to 15.\u00a0The AAP noted that the number of children receiving their first dose has been on the decline for five consecutive weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Still, Cardona urged governors to work with schools to make\u00a0COVID-19 vaccinations\u00a0mandatory,\u00a0particularly in areas where the disease is being\u00a0highly spread.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGovernors should work with their school officials and with their health officials to roll out requirements, especially in areas that are high-spread, and where students might be at risk for going back to remote learning, or hybrid learning, as a result of the spread of COVID-19,\u201d Cardona said.<\/p>\n<p>The education secretary also dismissed the potential for\u00a0political backlash over the mandate,\u00a0particularly in conservative-led states such as Florida, where\u00a0Gov. Ron DeSantis has pushed back against\u00a0COVID-related mandates such as requiring students to wear masks in schools.<\/p>\n<p>Cardona said the vaccine mandate was about \u201csafely reopening schools.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd what we know, based on not only on the COVID-19 vaccine, but the other vaccines that are already mandatory for school enrollment, is that they work.
