Damages sought from both the Times and his niece are \u201cto be determined at trial, but believed to be no less than One Hundred Million Dollars,\u201d the suit says according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/donald-trump-sues-new-york-times-and-his-niece-mary-trump-over-tax-story\">The Daily Beast<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore to come, including on other people, and Fake News media,\u201d Trump told the Beast in a statement on the lawsuit.<\/p>\n<p>Mary Trump and the Times both dismissed the former president\u2019s lawsuit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think he is a f***ing loser, and he is going to throw anything against the wall he can,\u201d Mary Trump said. \u201cIt\u2019s desperation. The walls are closing in and he is throwing anything against the wall that will stick. As is always the case with Donald, he\u2019ll try and change the subject.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for the Times told the Beast: \u201cThe Times\u2019 coverage of Donald Trump\u2019s taxes helped inform citizens through meticulous reporting on a subject of overriding public interest. This lawsuit is an attempt to silence independent news organizations and we plan to vigorously defend against it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit sprang out of a story the Times published in October 2018 based on a cache of Trump\u2019s tax documents. The lawsuit says the Times and reporters David Barstow, Russ Buettner, and Susanne Craig are \u201cdirectly responsible\u201d for Mary Trump handing over the tax documents in violation of a 2001 confidentiality agreement. The lawsuit cites Mary Trump\u2019s appearance on The Daily Beast\u2019s \u201cThe New Abnormal\u201d podcast in which she says Craig pushed her to hand over the documents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, um, I\u2019m actually really proud of that,\u201d Mary Trump said during her appearance on the show. \u201cBut I have to be honest with you, I didn\u2019t even remember I had [the Confidential Records]. It\u2019s entirely down to the brilliant Susanne Craig for, one, reminding me that I had them and, two, so effectively and tenaciously trying to convince \u2014 I mean it took her months before I did \u2014 so it\u2019s entirely down to her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Mary Trump released a book on the Trump family which had sparked another legal battle over the 2001 confidentiality agreement. Robert Trump, former President Trump\u2019s younger brother who died last year, sued Mary to stop the release of the book. Dutchess County Supreme Court Judge Hal Greenwald sided with Mary at the time, lifting a stay and allowing the book to be published.<\/p>\n<p>The book was marketed as containing \u201cdamning\u201d and embarrassing details about the Trump family. It also revealed Mary Trump as the primary source for the Times\u2019 story on former President Trump\u2019s taxes. As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/trumps-niece-to-publish-tell-all-book-on-president-reveals-she-was-primary-source-for-trump-tax-story\">The Daily Wire<\/a> reported at the time:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"14.413746630728\">\n<p><em>The book will reveal that Mary Trump was the primary source for a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2018\/10\/02\/us\/politics\/donald-trump-tax-schemes-fred-trump.html\">New York Times<\/a>&nbsp;investigation into the president\u2019s taxes. The investigation revealed that President Trump had inherited just over $400 million from his father. Mary Trump was source for the private tax documents obtained by the Times, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/mary-trump-donald-trumps-niece-is-writing-a-tell-all-book-that-details-how-she-leaked-tax-papers-to-nyt\/\">The Daily Beast<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The book will also include portions of damning conversations Mary Trump has had with the president\u2019s sister, retired federal judge Maryanne Trump Barry. Longtime divisions within the Trump family have been masked by a series of non-disclosure agreements and other members of the family keeping a low public profile.
