A CDC spokesperson stated the agency has not released an official warning about acute flaccid myelitis (AFM) in 2021.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The roughly three-minute video clip, posted last week in this particular instance, shows two men talking while text overlaying the footage reads, \u201cCDC says expect a polio like outbreak comming (<em>sic<\/em>) in children in the next four months.\u201d One of the men <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CT2Uf8FpK3f\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;ig_rid=3906080b-5099-4f07-821a-b81aa876c0ac\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in the video<\/a> says at one point, \u201cThey can foresee that there\u2019s gonna be a flooding into hospitals around the country, that children are going to present with paralyzed arms, paralyzed legs, they\u2019re not going to be able to walk. And the CDC is letting all the hospitals know\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The speaker references acute flaccid myelitis (AFM), a rare but serious neurological condition that, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/acute-flaccid-myelitis\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20493046\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mayo Clinic<\/a>, causes \u201csudden weakness in the arms or legs, loss of muscle tone, and loss of reflexes.\u201d AFM cases, most of which have occurred in young children, have been \u201cincreasing every other year in the US since 2014,\u201d the CDC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/grand-rounds\/pp\/2020\/20200703-acute-flaccid-myelitis.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">states<\/a> on its website.<\/p>\n<p>However, a review of the CDC website by Check Your Fact turned up <a href=\"https:\/\/search.cdc.gov\/search\/index.html?query=acute%20flaccid%20myelitis&amp;dpage=1#results\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">no record<\/a> of the agency issuing an advisory about AFM in 2021. Rather, the agency put out an official warning back in early August 2020, according to a press release titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/media\/releases\/2020\/p0803-acute-flaccid-myelitis-outbreak.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CDC Expects 2020 Outbreak of Life-Threatening Acute Flaccid Myelitis<\/a>.\u201d In the August 2020 press release, the agency said it \u201canticipates that 2020 will be another peak year for cases of acute flaccid myelitis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPediatricians and frontline providers in emergency departments and urgent care centers should be prepared to quickly recognize symptoms of AFM and immediately hospitalize patients,\u201d read the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/media\/releases\/2020\/p0803-acute-flaccid-myelitis-outbreak.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">August 2020 release<\/a> from the CDC, in part. \u201cTiming is critical at each step\u2014prompt AFM recognition leads to optimal medical management and early specimen collection. When health care providers recognize symptoms as soon as possible, there is a better chance of detecting the cause of AFM, which might help predict the outcome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span>CDC spokesperson Kate Grusich confirmed to Check Your Fact in an email that the CDC has not issued an official warning about AFM in 2021. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2021\/05\/03\/fact-check-fda-not-authorize-approve-covid-19-vaccine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Will The FDA Not Authorize Or Approve Any COVID-19 Vaccine?)<\/a><\/strong><\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>\u201cCDC has not issued an official warning such as a HAN or an Epi-X alert to clinicians in 2021 about acute flaccid myelitis (AFM), which is an uncommon but serious neurologic condition that causes weakness in the arms or legs,\u201d Grusish said. \u201cHowever, CDC\u2019s AFM Team continues to work with state health departments and professional medical organizations to educate clinicians about AFM in case we do see an increase in cases this year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The CDC started tracking AFM in the U.S. starting in August 2014.
