The original footage shows the explosion was the result of a plane hitting the building.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Two planes were flown into the World Trade Center towers in New York City as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.911memorial.org\/911-faqs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks<\/a> that killed nearly 3,000 people, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/09\/11\/1035528744\/911-sept-11-september-anniversary-20-year-memorials-ground-zero-pentagon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NPR<\/a>. Gatherings were held across the U.S. on Sept. 11 this year to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the attacks, the outlet reported.<\/p>\n<p>A video shared on Facebook attempts to baselessly suggest no planes were involved in the attack in New York. The video shows black smoke billowing from one of the World Trade Center towers before an explosion seemingly spontaneously rips through the other.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey never thought people who filmed the attacks on 9\/11 with their JVC handycam would post it to social media years later,\u201d claims the post\u2019s caption. \u201cThere were never any planes, share the heck out of this.\u201d <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2020\/09\/14\/fact-check-alexandria-ocasio-cortez-9-11-big-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Did Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Say, \u20189\/11 Wasn\u2019t That Big Of A Deal\u2019?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The video, however, appears to have been digitally altered to remove the plane, deceptively making the explosion seem as if it erupted from within the building. The original footage can be found on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PusI_dM_lpM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">YouTube<\/a> where it was shared by the account <a class=\"yt-simple-endpoint style-scope yt-formatted-string\" dir=\"auto\" spellcheck=\"false\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCtMf006J-WL-7r1T6guszjw\">EnhancedWTCVideos<\/a>. In the video, which the account attributes to PIX11 photojournalist <a href=\"https:\/\/pix11.com\/news\/local-news\/september-11-20-years-later\/20-years-later-pix11-remembers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Keith Lopez<\/a>, a plane can be seen clearly flying through the air before hitting the building. The footage shows the second plane, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/story\/911-timeline-how-the-day-unfolded-acbc78e3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">United Airlines Flight 175<\/a>, striking the South Tower, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/pix11.com\/news\/local-news\/september-11-20-years-later\/20-years-later-pix11-remembers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PIX11<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A video of Lopez talking about his experience filming the event can be found on PIX11\u2019s verified <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/tv\/CTn-0aQj3H3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Instagram account<\/a>. Lopez\u2019s footage of the event was also the subject of a 2002 article from <a href=\"https:\/\/observer.com\/2002\/09\/channel-11-cameramangranddad-won-pulitzercaptured-terrible-moment-and-never-recovered-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Observer<\/a>. He was not, however, the only person to capture footage of United Airlines Flight 175 hitting the South Tower. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7YLm3pkAiJQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Several<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=bn64AyrHe4Q&amp;t=388s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">others<\/a> also caught the moment of impact, including CNN\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=sBciZFE8lAw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">live&nbsp;broadcast<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This is not the first time a viral Facebook post has spread misinformation about the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
