Brian Babin and 44 other House Republicans are demanding that the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) remove \u201charmful content\u201d warnings from online copies of Founding-era documents, including the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, and the Bill of Rights.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe role of the National Archives should be to preserve our shared histories and educate future generations, not to deny, change, or demonize our past,\u201d the Republicans wrote to Archivist of the U.S. David Ferriero, in a letter obtained exclusively by the Daily Caller. NARA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archives.gov\/research\/reparative-description\/harmful-content\">announced<\/a> in late July that it would institute the labels, which warn of \u201cracist, sexist, ableist, misogynistic\/misogynoir, and xenophobic opinions and attitudes.\u201d <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/09\/17\/arizona-national-archives-records-association-warning-labels-declaration-of-independence-constitution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: EXCLUSIVE: Arizona Attorney General Condemns Biden Administration\u2019s Warning Lab On Constitution, Declaration)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Babin is not the first Republican member of Congress to express concern about the warning labels. Oklahoma Sen. James Lankford also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/national-archives-warning-labels-founding-documents-republican-senator\">called<\/a> for NARA to remove them, as has Republican Alabama Rep. Gary <a href=\"https:\/\/yellowhammernews.com\/palmer-blasts-national-archives-move-to-label-founding-documents-as-potentially-harmful-language\/\">Palmer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Republicans accused Ferriero and NARA of \u201cweaponizing words and needlessly politicizing the American story\u201d by instituting the content warnings.<\/p>\n<p>NARA instituted the warning labels following a recommendation from an internal Task Force on Racism. The Task Force, convened by Ferriero in response to an early executive order from President Joe Biden, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archives.gov\/files\/news\/archivists-task-force-on-racism-report.pdf\">urged<\/a> the independent federal agency to \u201c<span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">work toward dismantling structural racism\u201d and provide \u201ctraining on topics such as diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The content warnings do not point to specific language in the documents that are \u201charmful.\u201d NARA told Fox News on Sept. 16 that the warning label \u201cautomatically appears at the top of every page\u201d on the National Archives\u2019 online catalog.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Left\u2019s cancel culture has launched a full-frontal assault on the very documents that make up the foundation of our nation\u2019s story, and I will not stand idly by and watch,\u201d Babin told the Daily Caller. \u201cThe National Archives exists to preserve our shared stories and educate future generations on the trials and triumphs of our history, not to deny, change, or demonize our past. The Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and Bill of Rights were written to protect the freedoms and God-given rights of every American. Promoting anything other than this truth is not only a misrepresentation of our history, but a dereliction of duty.
