Their actions come as the Supreme Court set a December date to hear the case.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c[We] believe that, like themselves, the next generation of women athletes must be guaranteed bodily integrity and decisional autonomy in order to fully and equally participate in sports,\u201d the women <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/DocketPDF\/19\/19-1392\/193017\/20210920155533026_19-1392%20Amici%20Curiae.pdf\">wrote<\/a> in an amicus brief.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>WNBA players Diana Taurasi and Sue Bird \u2014 Rapinoe\u2019s fiance \u2014 are two of the women\u2019s athletes that are part of the brief.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The group argues that abortion is a major factor in the \u201cenormous success\u201d of women\u2019s sports and that women\u2019s participation in sports would be \u201cseverely impaired\u201d if the right to access abortion is restricted.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"19\">\n<p><i><span>Women\u2019s ability to \u2018participate equally in the economic and social life of the Nation\u2019\u2014including through high school, collegiate, and professional sports\u2014\u2019has been facilitated by their ability to control their reproductive lives.\u2019 \u2026 Absent the right to access safe and legal abortion care, and the ability of \u2018the woman to retain the ultimate control over her destiny and her body,\u2019 \u2026 women\u2019s sports would not be the enormous success they are today. Among other reasons, women\u2019s ability to participate and excel in athletics would decline, severely impairing the vitality of sports in the United States. Further, women and girls would be deprived of the multitude of collateral benefits that result from athletic participation, including greater educational success, career advancement, enhanced self-esteem, and improved health.&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>The brief continues, claiming that men and women only have a short window to \u201cachieve their greatest athletic potential,\u201d and, if \u201cthe State compelled women athletes to carry pregnancies to term and give birth, it could derail women\u2019s athletic careers, academic futures, and economic livelihoods at a large scale.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAbsent women\u2019s ability to control their bodies and reproductive decisions, the remarkable increase in women\u2019s participation and success in athletics\u2014and the concomitant increase in women\u2019s ability to enjoy the physical, financial, social, and emotional benefits of sports\u2014would not have occurred,\u201d the brief states.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Crissy Perham \u2014 captain of the 1992 Olympic swim team and an Olympic gold medalist swimmer \u2014 said in the brief that she had an abortion in college while on birth control.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWhen I was in college, I was on birth control, but I accidentally became pregnant. I was on scholarship, I was just starting to succeed in my sport, and I didn\u2019t want to take a year off,\u201d Perham said. \u201cI decided to have an abortion. I wasn\u2019t ready to be a mom, and having an abortion felt like I was given a second chance at life. I was able to take control of my future and refocus my priorities \u2026 That choice ultimately led me to being an Olympian, a college graduate, and a proud mother today. I\u2019m finally speaking up and sharing my story because there shouldn\u2019t be a stigma surrounding personal healthcare decisions. Women know what\u2019s best for our own bodies and lives, and our autonomy needs to be respected.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Rapinoe \u2014 who has placed herself in the middle of many political issues over the past several years \u2014 weighed in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am honored to stand with the hundreds of athletes who have signed onto this Supreme Court brief to help champion not only our constitutional rights, but also those of future generations of athletes,\u201d Rapinoe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/2021\/09\/20\/supreme-court-mississippi-abortion-law-women-athletes-warning\/8418765002\/\">said<\/a> in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPhysically, we push ourselves to the absolute limit, so to have forces within this country trying to deny us control over our own bodies is infuriating and un-American and will be met with fierce resistance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span>As reported by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/supreme-court-sets-date-to-hear-mississippi-abortion-case\"><span>The Daily Wire<\/span><\/a><span>, \u201cThe Supreme Court of the United States on Monday set the date of December 1st to hear the case about a Mississippi abortion law that directly challenges <\/span><i><span>Roe v.
