The Center for Medical Progress noted that Allegheny County \u2014 the \u201cmajor metropolitan area from which Pitt-based abortion practices draw patients\u201d \u2014 is 80% white and only 13% black.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The university uses the remains for disturbing experiments \u2014 which are approved by several internal medical ethics commissions, including the school\u2019s Institutional Review Board. In one example, researchers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.campusreform.org\/article?id=16610\"><span>grafted<\/span><\/a><span> the deceased babies\u2019 scalps to rodents for an immunology experiment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to the study \u2014 published in a prominent medical journal \u2014 researchers took \u201cfull-thickness human fetal skin\u201d and grafted it over rodents\u2019 rib cages, where the skin had been previously removed. The researchers referred to the result as \u201chumanized rodents.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In the wake of rebukes from Pennsylvania lawmakers, the university retained law firm Hyman Phelps &amp; McNamara to review its practices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cFetal tissue research is subject to robust internal controls at Pitt and highly regulated at the state and federal level,\u201d the university explained in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/pittsburgh\/news\/2021\/09\/09\/pitt-fetal-tissue-research-review.html\"><span>statement<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cThe university routinely conducts reviews to ensure that its research activities \u2014 across all areas of research \u2014 comply with internal policies as well as all relevant federal and state laws.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cPitt has taken this proactive step to ensure that it is positioned to continue leading the way \u2014 scientifically, legally and ethically \u2014 in practicing and advancing lifesaving research,\u201d added the release.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Pennsylvania State Rep. Natalie Mihalek (R-PA) \u2014 who represents the South Hills of Pittsburgh \u2014 <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pahousegop.com\/News\/20433\/Latest-News\/University-of-Pittsburgh-to-Undergo-Review-of-Fetal-Tissue-Research,-Mihalek-Announces\"><span>confirmed<\/span><\/a><span> that the university is updating elected officials on the investigation\u2019s findings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe review will begin immediately, and a full report will be made available upon completion,\u201d Mihalek said. \u201cAs a member of the General Assembly, with responsibilities to the taxpayers, and also a Commonwealth trustee of the university, it is vital that these questions are answered surrounding this.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>State Rep.
