The school board\u2019s mandate has drawn fire from Governor Ron DeSantis\u2019 administration as the Florida Department of Education has threatened to strip board members and other school officials of their salaries.<\/p>\n<p>Local chiropractor Dr. Dan Busch reportedly signed medical exemption slips for hundreds of students attending the school. In reaction, the school board updated its masking policy on September 1 to \u201conly accept medical exemption forms from licensed medical doctors, osteopathic physicians or advanced registered nurse practitioners,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/09\/16\/us\/florida-chiropractor-mask-exemption\/index.html\">CNN<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery evaluation that I performed was very specific and I performed them in my scope of practice,\u201d Busch told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mysuncoast.com\/2021\/09\/01\/venice-chiropractor-says-hes-doing-nothing-wrong-with-filling-out-medical-exemptions-opting-students-out-wearing-mask\/\">WWSB<\/a> last month. \u201cI had to stay very specific to the diagnoses that were in my wheelhouse, there are plenty that weren\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have not directly heard from the school district but I am more than happy to sit down with the school district,\u201d Busch said when asked about the board\u2019s plans to change its mask policy. \u201cI\u2019m not trying to do something that\u2019s shady, irrefutable, unethical. I\u2019ll sit down, I would be happy to come to them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The chiropractor said he did not grant every request for a mask exemption note, but he was struck by how many of the students\u2019 parents were reacting to the school\u2019s mask mandate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was so touching is that how many people actually broke down crying because they felt so helpless, and it hit me to have that opportunity to allow the parents to have a choice,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The school told CNN that it had rejected hundreds of exemption forms signed by Busch. Asked by CNN about the medical exemptions he gave to students, Busch said, \u201cthis wasn\u2019t about me. This is about parents\u2019 freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Sarasota County School Board is under fire from DeSantis for standing by its mandatory mask policy in violation of an order by the governor banning such mask mandates in schools. DeSantis\u2019 order continues to work its way through the legal system as Sarasota defends its mask policy. On Wednesday, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida <a href=\"https:\/\/storage.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.flsd.597646\/gov.uscourts.flsd.597646.98.0.pdf\">upheld<\/a> a lower court\u2019s ruling that DeSantis\u2019 order is legal.<\/p>\n<p>The court\u2019s ruling came after the 1st District Court of Appeals in Tallahassee reversed the decision striking down DeSantis\u2019 order. As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/breaking-desantis-scores-legal-win-in-fight-to-ban-school-mask-mandates\">The Daily Wire<\/a> reported:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"15\">\n<p><em>After the DeSantis administration filed an emergency motion asking an appeals court to reinstate a stay on his order to ban the mandates, the&nbsp;1st District Court of Appeal in Tallahassee&nbsp;granted the stay Friday.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201c1st District Court of Appeals just granted the State of Florida\u2019s request to reinstate the stay \u2014 meaning, the rule requiring ALL Florida school districts to protect parents\u2019 rights to make choices about masking kids is BACK in effect!\u201d posted Christina Pushaw, a spokeswoman for Gov.
