Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez may have violated a myriad of House ethics rules for attending the ritzy Met Gala on Monday evening while wearing a \u201ctax the rich\u201d dress, a conservative watchdog group alleged in a complaint obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>The watchdog group, National Legal and Policy Center, alleged in a complaint filed with the Office of Congressional Ethics on Thursday that Ocasio-Cortez\u2019s acceptance of free tickets to the event, which reportedly run at $35,000 apiece, for both herself and her boyfriend violated House Gift Rules. The group also alleged that Ocasio-Cortez received a prohibited gift from a paid attendee of the Met Gala by sitting at a sponsored table during the event, which are reportedly valued at up to $300,000.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the watchdog group alleged that <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/09\/13\/ocasio-cortez-wears-tax-rich-dress-elite-met-gala\/\">Ocasio-Cortez<\/a> may have accepted prohibited in-kind gifts due to her use of her custom-designed \u201ctax the rich\u201d dress and other services and amenities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRepresentative Ocasio-Cortez may have violated the House Gift Rule by accepting free admission for herself and boyfriend to the Met Gala event and receiving related gifts before, during, or after the event, including the use of custom-designed dress, limousine service, the use of the Carlyle Hotel, professional hair and makeup services, and any other related services or goods,\u201d stated the NLPC\u2019s complaint, which was filed by the group\u2019s counsel, Paul Kamenar.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the charity that receives the proceeds of the Met Gala, told the DCNF that Ocasio-Cortez and other elected officials that attended the Monday evening event were \u201cguests of the Museum.\u201dAnd Ocasio-Cortez said on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CTybzXHAHYh\/\">Instagram<\/a> after the event that she \u201cborrowed\u201d her dress from its designer, and that her attendance at the gala was in line with her \u201cresponsibilities in overseeing our city\u2019s cultural institutions that serve the public.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The NLPC is the second watchdog group to demand an ethics investigation into Ocasio-Cortez\u2019s attendance at the Met Gala this week. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/09\/15\/alexandria-ocasio-cortez-ethics-complaint-met-gala\/\">(RELATED: Ocasio-Cortez\u2019s Attendance At Lavish Met Gala Draws Ethics Complaint)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Another conservative watchdog group, the American Accountability Foundation, filed a <a href=\"https:\/\/9b57ee93-8fae-434e-a844-6b3e2e6dcd24.usrfiles.com\/ugd\/9b57ee_0bbb09db34774fedae37979172f56e21.pdf\">complaint<\/a> with the Office of Congressional Ethics on Tuesday arguing that <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/09\/14\/alexandria-ocasio-cortez-met-gala-working-class-vogue-interview\/\">Ocasio-Cortez<\/a> was not permitted to accept free tickets for the Met Gala because a for-profit company, Conde Nast, manages invitations to the charity event.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7283926\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" readability=\"36\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7283926\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7283926\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/aoc-tax-the-rich-scaled-1-scaled.jpg\" alt srcset=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/aoc-tax-the-rich-scaled-1-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/cdn01.dailycaller.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/aoc-tax-the-rich-80x120.jpg 80w, https:\/\/cdn01.dailycaller.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/aoc-tax-the-rich-414x620.jpg 414w, https:\/\/cdn01.dailycaller.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/aoc-tax-the-rich-768x1151.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cdn01.dailycaller.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/aoc-tax-the-rich-1025x1536.jpg 1025w, https:\/\/cdn01.dailycaller.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/aoc-tax-the-rich-2048x3070.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-7283926\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Aurora James attend The 2021 Met Gala Celebrating In America: A Lexicon Of Fashion at Metropolitan Museum of Art on September 13, 2021, in New York City. (Dimitrios Kambouris\/Getty Images for The Met Museum\/Vogue )<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The NLPC added in its complaint filed Thursday <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/09\/14\/socialist-party-alexandria-ocasio-cortez-met-gala-black-lives-matter-protests-police\/\">Ocasio-Cortez<\/a> may have also violated gift rules by sitting at a sponsored table during the event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn short, it is the table sponsor who is gifting or underwriting a coveted seat to AOC at the Gala,\u201d the complaint states. \u201cAnd if the sponsor of the table where AOC sat was one paid for by one of the corporations attending the event, such as Instagram or Facebook, AOC has received a prohibited gift from the corporation that also lobbies Congress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The complaint also highlighted potential issues surrounding Ocasio-Cortez\u2019s boyfriend, Riley Roberts, attending the Met Gala for <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/09\/14\/aoc-and-boyfriend-got-comped-by-met-to-attend-gala\/\">free<\/a> alongside the lawmaker, noting that the House Gift Rule permits lawmakers to only provide a second ticket to a charity fundraiser, their spouse or dependent child.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThus, because her boyfriend is not her \u2018spouse or dependent,\u2019 her acceptance of an \u2018invite plus one\u2019 to the Met Gala would violate the Gift Rule unless AOC or her boyfriend paid for his $35,000 ticket, an unlikely scenario,\u201d the NLPC\u2019s complaint states.<\/p>\n<p>Ocasio-Cortez\u2019s use of a custom \u201ctax the rich\u201d dress, even if borrowed only for the duration of the event, also violates the House Gift Rule because the dress designer had to devote \u201cvaluable professional services in designing and making this one-of-a-kind dress,\u201d the NLPC stated in its complaint.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"View NLPC Ethics Complaint Against AOC on Scribd\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/525677357\/NLPC-Ethics-Complaint-Against-AOC#from_embed\">NLPC Ethics Complaint Again\u2026<\/a> by <a title=\"View Andrew Kerr&#039;s profile on Scribd\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/user\/393392910\/Andrew-Kerr#from_embed\">Andrew Kerr<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Notably, neither of the complaints filed this week by the NLPC or the AAF demanded an investigation into Ocasio-Cortez\u2019s fellow Democratic lawmaker, Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CarolynBMaloney\/status\/1437535051835654146?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1437535051835654146%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fdailycaller.com%2F2021%2F09%2F15%2Falexandria-ocasio-cortez-ethics-complaint-met-gala%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carolyn Maloney<\/a>, who also attended the Met Gala on Monday evening wearing a dress with the slogan, \u201cequal rights for women.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ocasio-Cortez\u2019s office did not return a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Content created by The Daily Caller News Foundation is available without charge to any eligible news publisher that can provide a large audience.
