Rand Paul and Democratic California Sen. Alex Padilla introduced legislation Wednesday that would give more than 200,000 \u201cdocumented dreamers\u201d a path to citizenship.<\/p>\n<p>The bipartisan \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.padilla.senate.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/Padilla-Paul-Americas-Children-Act.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">America\u2019s Children Act<\/a>\u201d would provide \u201cchildren of long-term visa holders who have been waiting for years\u201d a chance at citizenship before they age past 21.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe cannot turn our backs on the \u2018Documented Dreamers\u2019 who have spent most of their lives in this country, contributing to their communities and our economy but face continued uncertainty and risk deportation once they turn 21,\u201d Padilla said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.padilla.senate.gov\/press-releases\/padilla-paul-introduce-bipartisan-bill-to-protect-thousands-of-documented-dreamers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">statement<\/a>. \u201cThese young people deserve the opportunity to pursue their American dream and continue building lives in the country they call home.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" readability=\"8.5440251572327\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">New: <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenAlexPadilla?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@SenAlexPadilla<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenRandPaul?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@SenRandPaul<\/a> &amp; others have proposed *bipartisan immigration legislation* to put \u201cDocumented Dreamers\u201d (aka people who grew up here legally through their parent\u2019s visas but aged out) on a path to a green card. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/4zqoJ51rcB\">pic.twitter.com\/4zqoJ51rcB<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Suzanne Monyak (@SuzanneMonyak) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SuzanneMonyak\/status\/1438201341692858370?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 15, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>More than 200,000 children and young adults are legal dependents of migrants who hold nonimmigrant visas such as H-1B visas and grew up in the U.S., but face deportation upon reaching 21, when their dependent status expires. Visas, like the H-4 and L-2, are limited to cover spouses and dependents under 21. While these dependents are able to obtain green cards, \u201cthey often end up stuck in a decades-long backlog,\u201d according to Padilla\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from providing a pathway to citizenship, the legislation would also create an \u201cage-out\u201d protection that uses the child\u2019s age on the date which they filed for a green card rather than using the \u201cfinal action date.\u201d The legislation would also provide work authorization for the \u201cdocumented dreamers\u201d who are over the age of 16 but whose green cards are still pending.<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/09\/15\/democrats-slide-show-highlights-105-billion-amnesty-illegal-immigrants-reconciliation-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: EXCLUSIVE: Democrats\u2019 Slideshow Highlights Amnesty Proposal For Illegal Immigrants That Would Cost $105 Billion In Reconciliation Bill)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Individuals, however, would be required to have been residing in the U.S. for a total of 10 continuous years, including four while under their parent\u2019s work visa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese children who have legally called the United States home for many years and even decades, are contributing members in our communities and to our economy,\u201d Paul said. \u201cThey shouldn\u2019t be penalized by the government\u2019s failures in addressing green card backlogs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A majority of \u201cdocumented dreamers\u201d are Asian-American, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/padilla-paul-documented-dreamers-immigration-bill-f9212ed3-4d12-47ae-840f-2c52634de90c.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AXIOS<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Paul has been vocal in recent years that Republicans must show Hispanic voters they are not \u201cjust the party of deportation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During a 2014 symposium, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2014\/04\/01\/rand-paul-says-republicans-cannot-be-party-of-deportation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Paul said<\/a> it\u2019s up to the Republican party \u201cto get beyond deportation to get to the rest of the issues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think one way to get the door ajar is say that you know, Mrs. Garcia\u2019s nephew is not going to be sent home to Mexico,\u201d he said. \u201cYou know, because everybody \u2013 even those who are here illegally \u2013 know somebody who is here who doesn\u2019t have the proper visa.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Republican Kentucky Sen.
