Kurt Schrader, who voted against the bill, said during the hearing. \u201cAmericans, regardless of political affiliation, have made it clear Congress has to actually act and get something done.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>The legislation would have allowed Medicare to negotiate prices directly with pharmaceutical companies and created a $2,000 limit on out-of-pocket costs for Medicare recipients, according to Politico.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The House Committee on Energy and Commerce rejected a key drug pricing control bill in a stunning rebuke of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Democratic leadership.<\/p>\n<p>Democratic Reps. Kurt Schrader, Scott Peters and Kathleen Rice voted alongside their Republican colleagues on the panel, creating a 29-29 tie on the vote to pass the <a href=\"https:\/\/energycommerce.house.gov\/sites\/democrats.energycommerce.house.gov\/files\/documents\/Subtitle%20E_Drug%20Pricing.pdf\">legislation<\/a> during a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zUbSfZ5eIrQ\">committee hearing<\/a> Wednesday. (Al Drago\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cPolling consistently shows immense bipartisan support for Democrats\u2019 drug price negotiation legislation, including overwhelming majorities of Republicans and independents who are fed up with Big Pharma charging Americans so much more than they charge for the same medicines overseas,\u201d Henry Connelly, a spokesperson for Pelosi, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HenryVConnelly\/status\/1438217703173640193\">said<\/a> in a statement Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDelivering lower drug costs is a top priority of the American people and will remain a cornerstone of the Build Back Better Act as work continues between the House, Senate and White House on the final bill,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Patrick Gaspard, CEO of the left-leaning Center for American Progress, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanprogress.org\/press\/statement\/2021\/09\/14\/503833\/statement-reps-peters-rice-schraders-opposition-drug-pricing-proposal-threatens-passage-build-back-better-act\/\">said<\/a> the three Democratic defectors were \u201cprioritizing drug company profits over lower drug prices for the American people.\u201d <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/09\/09\/stephanie-murphy-reconciliation-full-bill-artificial-deadline\/\">(RELATED: \u2018An Impossible Position\u2019: Moderate Democrat Won\u2019t Vote For Reconciliation In Committee Unless She Sees Bill \u2018In Its Entirety\u2019)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Schrader, Peters and Rice have received a combined $2 million in campaign contributions from the pharmaceutical industry, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SawyerHackett\/status\/1438229350827053060\">according<\/a> to Sawyer Hackett, executive director of the progressive political action committee People First Future.<\/p>\n<p>PhRMA, a powerful group that represents pharmaceutical interests on Capitol Hill, had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phrma.org\/en\/HR3\">lobbied<\/a> heavily against the legislation.
