A senior administration official said the move is dedicated to strengthening America\u2019s alliances and meeting the \u201cchallenges of the 21st century.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Most notably, the three countries will announce their shared efforts in supporting Australia\u2019s wish in acquiring nuclear powered submarines, according to the senior administration official. The countries will launch an 18-month trilateral plan dedicated to figuring out how to best meet Australia\u2019s goals.<\/p>\n<p>Historically, Great Britain is the only other country that the U.S. has shared nuclear technology of this level with, the official pointed out. Montgomery\/U.S. Navy via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThis will give Australia the capability for their submarines to \u2026 deploy for longer periods, they\u2019re quieter, they\u2019re much more capable,\u201d the official said.<\/p>\n<p>The official was adamant that the new partnership \u2013 and sharing nuclear-defense infrastructure with Australia \u2013 is not aimed at any one country. Still, it appears evident that the underlying context surrounds Western allies\u2019 continued pressure against China, as Politico <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2021\/09\/15\/biden-deal-uk-australia-defense-tech-sharing-511877\">reported<\/a> earlier Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the biggest strategic step that Australia has taken in generations,\u201d the senior official said. \u201cIt\u2019s a substantial strategic alignment for Australia, building on a deep partnership with both countries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The situation was described as \u201cnuclear propulsion\u201d and the official said Australia \u201chas no intention of pursuing nuclear weapons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>AUUKUS\u2019s inception comes as Beijing continues to grow its military arsenal. The country has also recently comes exceedingly close to Japanese and U.S. waters, Politico reported.
