Kevin Hern and Lloyd Smucker introduced the bills as amendments to Democrats\u2019 $3.5 trillion <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/09\/07\/democrats-all-in-budget-joe-biden-congressional-majorities-passage-far-from-certain-budget-reconciliation\/\">budget reconciliation<\/a> package during the committee\u2019s markup of parts of the <a href=\"https:\/\/waysandmeans.house.gov\/sites\/democrats.waysandmeans.house.gov\/files\/documents\/SUBFGHJ_xml.pdf\">sweeping legislation<\/a>. The House Ways and Means Committee, tasked with ironing out legislative tax proposals, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=tTb1QOhyWeA\">entered<\/a> its fourth and final day of markups on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not hard to understand that this is the wrong time for Democrats to shove one of the largest tax increases in American history on the American people that have not regained their strength from the brutal blow of COVID-19,\u201d Hern <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/72ARkGaBxPk?t=2813\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a> during the hearing Tuesday. \u201cInflation is a tax on all Americans and it hurts working-class Americans the most.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hern\u2019s amendment <a href=\"https:\/\/gop-waysandmeans.house.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/3-Hern-CS-Text.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">proposed<\/a> to delay all tax increases until the annual inflation rate fell to or \u201cbelow 2.5% for 12 consecutive months.\u201d In August, consumer prices surged more than twice that rate, increasing at an annual rate of <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/09\/14\/inflation-august-consumer-price-index-joe-biden\/\">5.3<\/a>% and falling in line with a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/08\/27\/inflation-index-surges-commerce-department-report-united-states-economy-joe-biden\/\">trend<\/a> of high inflation. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/09\/15\/e-commerce-prices-inflation-adobe-digital-insights\/\">(RELATED: E-Commerce Prices Have Skyrocketed Because Of Inflation: REPORT)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Ways and Means Committee Markup of Build Back Better Act (Day 3, Part 2)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/72ARkGaBxPk?start=3715&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a particularly bad time to raise taxes by over $2 trillion when the economy has not yet fully recovered,\u201d Smucker <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/72ARkGaBxPk?t=3715\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stated<\/a> after introducing his amendment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis bill would simply say, \u2018allow the economy to recover fully before implementing, if you must, some of these Green New Deal wishlist policy items,&#8217;\u201d he continued. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/09\/09\/house-small-business-committee-democrats-blaine-luetkemeyer-taliban-afghanistan\/\">(RELATED: \u2018A Disgrace\u2019: Democrats Block Bill Determining If COVID-19 Relief Went To Taliban)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The bill Smucker <a href=\"https:\/\/gop-waysandmeans.house.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/5-Smucker-CS-Text.pdf\">introduced<\/a> would have delayed all tax hikes until the national unemployment rate fell back to pre-pandemic levels for six consecutive months.
