Alexandria-Cortez may have worn a dress emblazoned \u201cTax the Rich\u201d to Monday\u2019s Met Gala, but she was also wearing earrings reputedly valued at $450 and shoes reportedly valued at roughly $614.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cTax the Rich\u201d dress designed by Aurora James was worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-9991549\/Self-proclaimed-socialist-AOC-bagged-free-Mejuri-jewelry-wearing-Tax-Rich-dress.html\">The Daily Mail<\/a> noted, adding that the 14-karat designer Mejuri jewelry gold hoop earrings were listed as worth $450 and the open-toed red shoes from James\u2019 Brother Vellies fashion line were valued at roughly $614. Ocasio-Cortez also carried a James purse that also featured the \u201cTax the Rich\u201d mantra.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can never get too comfortable in our seats at the table once they\u2019ve been given,\u201d James stated, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/article\/alexandria-ocasio-cortez-met-gala-2021\">Vogue<\/a>. \u201cWe must always continue to push ourselves, push our colleagues, push the culture, and push the country forward. Fashion is changing; America is changing. And as far as this theme goes, I think Alexandria and I are a great embodiment of the language fashion needs to consider adding to the general lexicon as we work towards a more sustainable, inclusive, and empowered future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ocasio-Cortez stated in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/2021\/09\/aoc-met-gala-tax-the-rich\">press release<\/a>, \u201cDespite being held in New York City, the culture of the Met Gala is everything but. NYC is often synonymous with inclusivity, inviting millions of people from different walks of life to call this city home. The Met Gala, on the other hand, is seen as elite and inaccessible. I\u2019m attending today because I want to change just that and spotlight women of color who are often not included during events like these.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ocasio-Cortez <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/rep-alexandria-ocasio-cortez-responds-backlash-tax-rich\/story?id=80010808\">complained on Instagram<\/a> that she was criticized more harshly because she\u2019s a woman, writing, \u201cI am so used to doing the same exact thing that men do \u2014 including popular male progressive elected officials \u2014 and getting a completely different response.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOcasio-Cortez took to her Instagram story to show off the spike in the \u2018Tax the Rich\u2019 term on Google. \u2018Surge in people looking up and discussing our f\u2014ed up tax code is [and] how we fix it so we can fund childcare, healthcare, climate action and student loan forgiveness for all? [Aurora James] understood the assignment,\u2019 she wrote,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/qns.com\/2021\/09\/queens-congresswomen-attend-met-gala-with-statement-gowns\/\">QNS<\/a> noted.<\/p>\n<p>Ocasio-Cortez tweeted in May 2019, \u201cWhen we say \u2018tax the rich,\u2019 we mean nesting-doll yacht rich. For-profit prison rich. Betsy DeVos, student-loan-shark rich.&nbsp;Trick-the-country-into-war rich.
