MacDonald was reportedly privately battling cancer for nine years before his passing.<\/p>\n<p>A friend of MacDonald\u2019s, Lori Jo Hoekstra, said the \u201cWeekend Update\u201d anchor \u201chad been fighting cancer for nearly a decade but was determined to keep his struggle away from family, friends and fans,\u201d The New York Post <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/09\/14\/norm-macdonald-snl-star-dead-at-61\/\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was most proud of his comedy,\u201d said Hoekstra, who was with MacDonald when he passed. \u201cHe never wanted the diagnosis to affect the way the audience or any of his loved ones saw him. Norm was a pure comic. He once wrote that \u2018a joke should catch someone by surprise, it should never pander.\u2019 He certainly never pandered. Norm will be missed terribly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2016\/05\/13\/norm-macdonald-just-wants-to-go-back-to-school\/?_ga=2.46794721.714932836.1631578636-1941273117.1559752445\">highlighted<\/a> by Page Six, the Quebec City native wrote for the show \u201cRoseanne,\u201d appeared on \u201cThe Drew Carey Show,\u201d and then become a household name with his deadpan humor for SNL\u2019s \u201cWeekend Update.\u201d In 1998, he was fired from the show by creator Lorne Michaels and appeared in multiple movies. Most recently, MacDonald hosted a Netflix show aptly titled, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/watch-michael-knowles-defends-norm-macdonald-only-daily-wire\">Norm MacDonald Has A Show<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2019, MacDonald <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/former-snl-star-norm-macdonald-reacts-firing-shane-amanda-prestigiacomo\">targeted<\/a> cancel culture when SNL fired comedian Shane Gillis from the cast.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course you know, this means WAR,\u201d Macdonald wrote on Twitter at the time, captioning a report on Gillis\u2019 firing. The post become Macdonald\u2019s \u201cpinned\u201d tweet for some time.<\/p>\n<p>When news hit the internet of MacDonald\u2019s passing, social media blew up with memories from the comedian\u2019s work.<\/p>\n<p>Writer David Gardner notably recalled a comment from MacDonald concerning battles with cancer. \u201cI\u2019m pretty sure, I\u2019m not a doctor, but I\u2019m pretty sure if you die, the cancer dies at the same time. That\u2019s not a loss.
