The Senate returned on Monday to a list of priorities needing to be tackled throughout the month as the House wouldn\u2019t return from recess until September 20.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Biden administration said the debt limit needed to be raised ahead of an October deadline as the U.S. reached its debt limit at $28.4 trillion on August 1.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have annual deficits, we\u2019re not taking in as much money from taxes as we\u2019re spending. We have to increase our debt over time and that means we have to borrow,\u201d explained Shai Akabas, Director of Economic Policy at the Bipartisan Policy Center. \u201c\u2026The Treasury Department can\u2019t borrow the additional money it needs to pay all the bills and also service all the outstanding debt that we have. That\u2019s a problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Democrats have wanted to increase the debt limit with Republican support. However, Republicans said Democrats would have to do it alone if they wanted the increase, which has led to a standstill on the issue.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I am joining more than 100 of my Republican colleagues in promising not to vote to raise the debt limit. Russ Fulcher (@RepRussFulcher) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepRussFulcher\/status\/1436026796521267200?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 9, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s important is that they need to see that this date is fast approaching,\u201d Akabas stated. \u201cThe risks grow the closer that we get to it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While government funding could lapse if a funding bill wasn\u2019t passed by the September 30 deadline, the Biden administration has pushed for nearly $24 billion in disaster relief for things such as hurricanes and wildfires that have occurred over the past 18 months.
