Gavin Newsom has emerged as the clear favorite in Tuesday\u2019s recall election, riding a late wave of momentum as support for ousting him tanks.<\/p>\n<p>The race has been surprisingly <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/03\/18\/california-recall-backers-2-million-signatures-deadline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">close for months<\/a>, with most polls showing support for Newsom just barely outrunning those seeking to remove him. The contest was a dead heat as recently as mid-August, with support for keeping Newsom holding just a 0.2% lead in FiveThirtyEight\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/projects.fivethirtyeight.com\/california-recall-polls\/?cid=rrpromo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">polling average<\/a> as coronavirus cases increased and the state struggled to contain record-setting wildfires.<\/p>\n<p>Now, however, Newsom holds nearly a 17-point lead in a state where Democrats vastly outnumber Republicans, and will campaign alongside President Joe Biden Monday in a state he won by over 29 points last November. Support for the recall has fallen from nearly 48% to under 41% in a month, the average shows.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to Newsom\u2019s structural advantages, he has also benefited from having a perceived opponent. Conservative talk show host Larry Elder <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/07\/12\/larry-elder-candidacy-governor-california-race\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">entered the race<\/a> in July and quickly achieved frontrunner status, and the attacks soon followed.<\/p>\n<p>His ex-fianc\u00e9e <a href=\"https:\/\/losangeles.cbslocal.com\/2021\/08\/19\/larry-elder-abuse-allegations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">accused<\/a> him of domestic violence, and he denied an accusation of sexual harassment by saying that the woman making the allegation was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/09\/02\/politics\/kfile-larry-elder-sexual-harassment-allegations\/index.html\">too ugly for it to be true<\/a>. (APU GOMES\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Newsom meanwhile, has <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GavinNewsom\/status\/1433214641979625476\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tied<\/a> Elder\u2019s position to Texas\u2019 new law severely restricting abortion access, accusing him of celebrating its passage and the Supreme Court\u2019s deciding not to block it from entering into effect.<\/p>\n<p>The incumbent has also attacked Elder on his position to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nieto_phillip\/status\/1429568776572260356\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">repeal all vaccine mandates<\/a> in the state, comparing his policy to states like Florida, which experienced one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/healthdata.gov\/Community\/COVID-19-State-Profile-Report-Florida\/ht94-9tjc\">highest<\/a> coronavirus case increases nationwide.&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/09\/09\/larry-elder-gavin-newsom-vaccine-mandate-campaign-rally\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Elder Blasts Newsom\u2019s Vaccine Mandate In Exclusive Video)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>California also has <a href=\"https:\/\/ktla.com\/news\/california\/california-senate-votes-to-ensure-all-registered-voters-get-mail-ballots-before-every-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sent mail-in ballots<\/a> to every registered voter in the state, potentially increasing Democratic turnout and blunting any GOP enthusiasm advantage that existed.
