The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.verizon.com\/about\/sites\/default\/files\/Small-Business-Recovery-Survey-9-8-2021.pdf\"><span>Small Business Recovery Survey<\/span><\/a><span> \u2014 which surveyed 608 small to midsize businesses between August 5 and August 16 \u2014 found that roughly three in ten have turned to automation:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"9\">\n<p><i><span>In the past year, 1 in 5 decision makers have hired employees who do not live locally for roles in which they can work remotely (20%), and 30% have implemented new systems or technology to compensate for a shortage of workers.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>Beyond the worker shortage, 92% of managers surveyed by Morning Consult were \u201cvery concerned\u201d about the effects of COVID-19 and the lockdown-induced recession on small businesses in the United States. Meanwhile, 72% said that the recession had a negative impact on their own businesses\u2019 financial security.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Larger corporations have likewise used automation amid the worker shortage. For instance, as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/many-jobs-lost-during-the-coronavirus-pandemic-just-arent-coming-back-11626341401?mod=hp_lead_pos5\"><span>The Wall Street Journal<\/span><\/a><span> described in July, restaurant chains with national footprints are implementing new technological solutions:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"15\">\n<p><i><span>At restaurant and entertainment chain Dave &amp; Buster\u2019s Entertainment Inc., customers now use digital tablets to order food and drink, allowing managers to schedule fewer servers, the company\u2019s chief operating officer, Margo Manning, said on a call with investors in June. Applebee\u2019s is now using tablets to allow customers to pay at their tables without summoning a waiter. The hand-held screens provide a hedge against labor inflation, according to John Peyton, CEO of Applebee\u2019s parent Dine Brands Global Inc.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>As <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/large-businesses-are-using-technology-to-dodge-minimum-wage-hikes\"><span>The Daily Wire<\/span><\/a><span> previously reported, Amazon began experimenting with a store featuring \u201ccashierless checkout technology\u201d in Washington state. As customers who visit the Amazon Fresh store \u201cJust Walk Out\u201d with their items, the building tracks the purchases and automatically charges the user\u2019s Amazon account.
