Taylor, who served as the FDA\u2019s deputy commissioner for foods and veterinary medicine from 2010 to 2016, years after working as an executive for Monsanto. He no longer works at the FDA.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Facebook post shows a screen grab of tweet purportedly from musician Kid Rock claiming that the current deputy commissioner of the FDA was once the vice president of the agribusiness company Monsanto. However, the man <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20100303091310\/http:\/\/www.fda.gov\/AboutFDA\/CentersOffices\/OC\/OfficeofFoods\/ucm196721.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pictured<\/a> in the screen grabbed tweet, Taylor, is not the FDA\u2019s current deputy commissioner.<\/p>\n<p>While Taylor did, according to a 2016 FDA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/food\/cfsan-constituent-updates\/changes-leadership-fdas-foods-and-veterinary-medicine-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">press release<\/a>, serve as the FDA\u2019s deputy commissioner for foods and veterinary medicine from 2010 to 2016, he never served as the principal deputy commissioner, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/about-fda\/fda-leadership-1907-today\/deputy-commissioners\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FDA records<\/a>. The principal deputy commissioner position is vacant at the time of publication, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/about-fda\/fda-organization\/fda-leadership-profiles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FDA\u2019s leadership profile webpage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/about-fda\/fda-organization\/frank-yiannas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Frank Yiannas<\/a> currently holds Taylor\u2019s former position, which now goes by the title deputy commissioner for food policy and response, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.natlawreview.com\/article\/ostroff-retires-fda-deputy-commissioner-foods-and-vet-medicine-fda-to-undergo-food\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The National Law Review<\/a>. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2020\/08\/14\/fact-check-mississippi-louisiana-alabama-cnn-license\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Did Mississippi, Alabama And Louisiana Revoke CNN\u2019s Broadcasting License?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As the screen grabbed tweet suggests, Taylor previously worked for Monsanto, serving as the vice president of Public Policy from 1998 to 2001, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/blogpost\/post\/monsanto-petition-tells-obama-cease-fda-ties-to-monsanto\/2012\/01\/30\/gIQAA9dZcQ_blog.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Washington Post<\/a>. Several activists opposed his appointment to the FDA because of his previous work at Monsanto, the outlet reported.<\/p>\n<p>Monsanto was <a href=\"https:\/\/media.bayer.com\/baynews\/baynews.nsf\/id\/Bayer-closes-Monsanto-acquisition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">acquired<\/a> by Bayer in 2018. Bayer said in June 2020 that it would pay $8.8 billion to $9.6 billion \u201cto resolve the current Roundup\u2122 litigation\u201d and $1.25 billion \u201cto support a separate class agreement to address potential future litigation\u201d inherited through its Monsanto acquisition, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/media.bayer.com\/baynews\/baynews.nsf\/id\/Bayer-announces-agreements-to-resolve-major-legacy-Monsanto-litigation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">press release<\/a>. Thousands of lawsuits have alleged Monsanto\u2019s weed-killing product Roundup causes cancer, while Bayer has refuted that allegation, the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/cancer-lawsuits-ap-top-news-ca-state-wire-mo-state-wire-a12603a80c8238d1f7af3705cfec610a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Associated Press<\/a> reported. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/pesticides\/epa-finalizes-glyphosate-mitigation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">concluded<\/a> in January 2020 that \u201cthere are no risks of concern to human health\u201d when glyphosate, a key ingredient in Roundup, is \u201cused according to the label.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Taylor currently serves as a Meridian Institute <a href=\"https:\/\/merid.org\/team\/senior-fellows\/michael-r-taylor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">senior fellow<\/a> and is on the board of directors for the consumer advocacy organization <a href=\"https:\/\/stopfoodborneillness.org\/our-team-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stop Foodborne Illness<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An image\u00a0shared on Facebook claims to show the current deputy commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).Verdict: Misleading The image shows Michael R.
