Chairwoman Maxine Waters hasn\u2019t pushed the committee to consider the bill, which is supported by every Financial Services Republican.<\/p>\n<p>A discharge petition is a legislative maneuver that <a href=\"https:\/\/indivisible.org\/resource\/legislative-process-101-discharge-petitions\">enables<\/a> a minority party in the House to bypass committee approval and force a floor vote on a piece of legislation. The petition requires signatures from a majority, or 218, of representatives to be successful. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/08\/27\/why-people-failing-pay-rent-billions-unspent-federal-aid\/\">(RELATED: Why Are People Failing To Pay Rent When There\u2019s Billions In Unspent Federal Aid?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis whole process has been unacceptable,\u201d McHenry said during a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1qC218wH3Pw\">committee hearing<\/a> Friday. \u201cIt has been two months since the federal eviction moratorium expired and several weeks since the Supreme Court struck down President Biden\u2019s last-minute extension. (Mandel Ngan\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Late last month, the Supreme Court <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/08\/26\/supreme-court-brett-kavanaugh-joe-biden-cdc-eviction-moratorium\/\">blocked<\/a> the Biden administration\u2019s eviction moratorium, which was <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/08\/05\/landlords-joe-biden-cdc-eviction-moratorium-lawsuit\/\">extended<\/a> to October weeks earlier. But the Treasury Department and state governments have <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/08\/25\/coronavirus-pandemic-emergency-rental-assistance-funds-states\/\">distributed<\/a> just a fraction of the more than $46 billion in Emergency Rental Assistance (ERA) Congress appropriated in December and March.<\/p>\n<p>The government\u2019s failure to efficiently disburse funds to low-income tenants who fell behind on rental payments during the pandemic coupled with the Supreme Court decision <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/data\/tables\/2021\/demo\/hhp\/hhp33.html\">potentially exposed millions<\/a> of Americans to immediate eviction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCongress promised relief to renters and property owners impacted by the pandemic,\u201d McHenry said in a statement Friday. \u201cDue to the Biden Administration\u2019s mismanagement and Congressional Democrats\u2019 inaction, American families have been left twisting in the wind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Republican leader also criticized a bill to combat the eviction crisis that Waters <a href=\"https:\/\/financialservices.house.gov\/news\/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=408292\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">introduced<\/a> after the high court\u2019s ruling. McHenry said Democrats\u2019 legislation would only mean \u201cmore red tape, more bureaucracy, and more delays.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRepublicans have been offering a commonsense solution for months\u2014the Renter Protection Act\u2014to fix the ERA programs, make mom-and-pop property owners whole, and end the threat of eviction,\u201d the North Carolina Republican said. \u201cThis discharge petition will force Congress to finally keep the promise we made to renters and property owners almost one year ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for McHenry said Republicans haven\u2019t yet reached 218 signatures, but expect to get more once the House is back in session.<\/p>\n<p>Content created by The Daily Caller News Foundation is available without charge to any eligible news publisher that can provide a large audience.
