because the documents did not immediately guarantee freedom for everyone.<\/p>\n<p>According to Fox News, which obtained a recording of one of the task force\u2019s meetings through the Freedom of Information Act, members of the task force decried the term \u201ccharters of freedom\u201d and demanded that the nation\u2019s founding documents be relabeled on the website and the slogan removed from the documents\u2019 physical display in the National Archives Rotunda.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">\u201cApproximately 800&nbsp;National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) employees from across the country attended a town hall meeting of the Archives\u2019 Task Force on Racism on May 11,\u201d Fox News noted. \u201cDuring the presentation, a museum subgroup recommended that NARA \u2018retire\u2019 the term \u2018charters of freedom\u2019 as descriptors for the U.S. Constitution, Bill of Rights and Declaration of Independence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe should retire the term charters of freedom and remove it from our web pages, publications and exhibits because, as we learned, these documents did not result in freedom for everyone,\u201d one task force member is recorded as saying.<\/p>\n<p>Another said that the labels and other references to \u201cfreedom\u201d should be removed in order to&nbsp;\u201censure that everyone feels welcomed, included and represented at our museums and presidential libraries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe never want our exhibits, programs or educational materials to make people feel alienated or excluded,\u201d a presenter added.<\/p>\n<p>As The Daily Wire reported previously, the same National Archives\u2019 task force also blasted the building\u2019s Rotunda, which they called an example of \u201cstructural racism\u201d because of its frescoes depicting America\u2019s founding and because the narrative of the Founding Father\u2019s efforts was \u201ctoo positive.\u201d The group suggested \u201cmajor changes\u201d to the Rotunda\u2019s displays so that visitors could view the nation\u2019s founding documents \u201cin context.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The documents themselves, the group suggested, should have \u201ctrigger warnings\u201d for individuals who might suffer from \u201cphysiological and psychological symptoms\u201d after viewing the Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and Bill of Rights.<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"11\">\n<p><em>\u201cProviding an advisory notice to users gives us an opportunity to mitigate harm and contextualize the records..It creates a space to share with the public our ultimate goals for reparative description, demonstrate our commitment to the process, and address any barriers that we may face in achieving these goals (i.e., the size and scope of the Catalog and the ever-evolving knowledge we gain regarding what is harmful).\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The National Archives appears to have recently implemented that last recommendation. As The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/constitution-declaration-of-independence-now-have-trigger-warnings-on-national-archives-site\">Daily Wire reported<\/a> earlier this week, a note marking the documents as potentially containing \u201charmful language\u201d now hovers over the National Archives\u2019 digital copies of the Constitution, Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights, and other historical documents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Catalog and web pages contain some content that may be harmful or difficult to view,\u201d NARA said in a statement released at the end of July. \u201cNARA\u2019s records span the history of the United States, and it is our charge to preserve and make available these historical records. As a result, some of the materials presented here may reflect outdated, biased, offensive, and possibly violent views and opinions.
