Stanford University\u2019s Hoover Institution <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hoover.org\/research\/california-businesses-leave-state-thousands\"><span>points<\/span><\/a><span> to high taxes, government red tape, and other policies that discourage economic activity. Occurrences of companies fleeing the state have become commonplace enough for the California Policy Center to track the moves through its \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/californiapolicycenter.org\/the-california-book-of-exodus\/\"><span>Book of Exoduses<\/span><\/a><span>.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As one young tech entrepreneur who recently left California explains, \u201cI\u2019ve struggled with a government that is notoriously business-unfriendly \u2014 with everything from high taxes on earning to badgering businesses to work more to comply with bureaucracy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Here are five notable companies and entrepreneurs bolting from the Golden State.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Tesla<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Instead of expanding its production capacities in Palo Alto, electric car manufacturer Tesla built a new factory in Austin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In May of 2020, Tesla CEO Elon Musk grew frustrated with the continual shuttering of his company\u2019s main factory in Alameda County. He <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1259159878427267072\"><span>tweeted<\/span><\/a><span> that the \u201cunelected &amp; ignorant \u2018Interim Health Officer\u2019 of Alameda is acting contrary to the Governor, the President, our Constitutional freedoms &amp; just plain common sense!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cFrankly, this is the final straw,\u201d he continued. \u201cTesla will now move its HQ and future programs to Texas\/Nevada immediately. If we even retain Fremont manufacturing activity at all, it will be dependen[t] on how Tesla is treated in the future. Tesla is the last carmaker left in CA.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cF*ck Elon Musk,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LorenaSGonzalez\/status\/1259287879177531392\"><span>retorted<\/span><\/a><span> one California state representative. \u201cMessage received,\u201d Musk responded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Within a few days, Alameda County <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Dare2BWell\/status\/1260430367061876736\"><span>rushed<\/span><\/a><span> to accommodate Tesla \u2014 a move that persuaded the firm to continue its remaining operations in California.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Nevertheless, the company has since emphasized moving future production to Texas. Tesla is currently working to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/austin\/news\/2021\/05\/06\/tesla-site-plan-bobcat-project.html\"><span>build<\/span><\/a><span> a $1.1 billion factory east of Austin; last month, details emerged of an additional manufacturing site planned for the area. SpaceX \u2014 another venture led by Musk \u2014 is also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/austin\/news\/2021\/04\/02\/sources-spacex-facility-planned-near-tesla-plant.html\"><span>establishing<\/span><\/a><span> roots in Austin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Accordingly, Musk \u2014 currently the third richest man in the world \u2014 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/technology-55246148\"><span>moved<\/span><\/a><span> to Austin himself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Charles Schwab<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Financial services company Charles Schwab is likewise moving to Texas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAs part of the integration process, the corporate headquarters of the combined company will eventually relocate to Schwab\u2019s new campus in Westlake, Texas,\u201d said the company in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/sanfrancisco\/news\/2019\/11\/25\/charles-schwab-to-move-headquarters-out-of-san.html\"><span>statement<\/span><\/a><span> announcing its $26 billion merger with TD Ameritrade.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Charles Schwab\u2019s stock price instantly rose by more than a dollar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Two years earlier, Chairman Chuck Schwab <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/sanfrancisco\/news\/2019\/05\/16\/charles-schwab-schw-san-francisco-headquarters.html\"><span>warned<\/span><\/a><span> that the tax climate in California could push the business out of the state. Citing his company\u2019s facilities in Texas, Colorado, New York, and Orlando, Schwab stated that \u201cthe cost of doing business here are so much higher than some other place, we\u2019ll have to move there.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The firm launched its operations from San Francisco in 1971. By 2000, Charles Schwab employed 20,000 people in the Bay Area. In 2019, however, it employed 1,200.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Oracle<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Software company Oracle announced a move out of its historic home in California.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cOracle is implementing a more flexible employee work location policy and has changed its Corporate Headquarters from Redwood City, California to Austin, Texas,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/12\/11\/oracle-is-moving-its-headquarters-from-silicon-valley-to-austin-texas.html\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> a company spokesperson to CNBC. \u201cWe believe these moves best position Oracle for growth and provide our personnel with more flexibility about where and how they work.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The company added that they would \u201ccontinue to support major hubs for Oracle around the world, including those in the United States such as Redwood City, Austin, Santa Monica, Seattle, Denver, Orlando and Burlington, among others, and we expect to add other locations over time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Oracle \u2014 one of the first companies to establish roots in Silicon Valley and participate in the area\u2019s business renaissance \u2014 was launched in 1977 and had remained in California since its founding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Co-founder Larry Ellison <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/companies\/news\/oracle-chairman-joins-other-tech-leaders-in-leaving-california-11608009655546.html\"><span>announced<\/span><\/a><span> that he would also be leaving California.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI\u2019ve received a number of inquiries about whether or not I will be moving to Texas,\u201d he told Oracle employees. \u201cThe answer is no. I\u2019ve moved to the State of Hawaii and I\u2019ll be using the power of Zoom to work from the island of Lanai.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>HP<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Hewlett Packard Enterprise \u2014 another technology company \u2014 announced a move to Texas last year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cHPE has made the decision to relocate its headquarters from San Jose, California, to Houston, Texas,\u201d said the company in a 2020 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/investors.hpe.com\/~\/media\/Files\/H\/HP-Enterprise-IR\/documents\/q4-2020\/q4-2020-earnings-press-release.pdf\"><span>earnings report<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cHPE\u2019s largest U.S. employment hub, Houston is an attractive market to recruit and retain future diverse talent, and is where the company is currently constructing a state-of-the-art new campus.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>CEO Antonio Neri <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gov.texas.gov\/news\/post\/governor-abbott-announces-hewlett-packard-enterprise-global-headquarters-relocation-to-texas\"><span>cited<\/span><\/a><span> \u201cour business needs, opportunities for cost savings, and team members\u2019 preferences about the future of work\u201d as reasons for the relocation. Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) welcomed the move: \u201cTexas offers the best business climate in the nation. Our low taxes, high quality of life, top-notch workforce, and tier one universities create an environment where innovative companies like HPE can flourish.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Hewlett Packard Enterprises \u2014 which spun off from HP Inc. in 2015 \u2014 is a business-to-business organization focusing upon consulting, cloud computing, and financial services. In 1939, Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/12\/01\/hpe-is-relocating-headquarters-to-houston-from-california.html\"><span>launched<\/span><\/a><span> the business from a Palo Alto garage.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Palantir<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Software firm Palantir also announced a move from Silicon Valley.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Beyond tax policies and business climate, Palantir \u2014 which was founded by conservative-leaning entrepreneur Peter Thiel in 2004 \u2014 cited California\u2019s political culture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>During an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/palantir-alex-karp-headquarters-california-1dd44454-89c5-4773-a01d-c0f183654c08.html\"><span>interview<\/span><\/a><span> with Axios, CEO Alex Karp cited the region\u2019s \u201cincreasing intolerance and monoculture\u201d \u2014 a reality that also extends to the firm\u2019s employees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI\u2019ve had my favorite employees yell at me,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019ve had some of my favorite employees leave. I had people protesting me. People protesting me, some of whom I think asked really legitimate questions. I\u2019ve asked myself if I were younger, at college, would I be protesting me? And you know, it depends?\u201d<\/span><span><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The company has faced <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.paloaltoonline.com\/news\/2018\/07\/31\/protesters-demand-palantir-end-ice-contracts\"><span>criticism<\/span><\/a><span> for contracting with the federal government \u2014 especially United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
