Adam Schiff sent letters to Amazon and Facebook on Wednesday urging the companies to remove content promoting alleged COVID-19 misinformation.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/context-cdn.washingtonpost.com\/notes\/prod\/default\/documents\/ee6ee887-9c4f-47de-b341-eb1c32b866ef\/note\/d3dcc42c-285e-4d7a-b2f8-f0f2a422a29f.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">letters<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepAdamSchiff\/status\/1435972106223767560\/photo\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">addressed<\/a> to Amazon\u2019s Andy Jassy and Facebook\u2019s Mark Zuckerberg, asked the companies to take \u201cimmediate action\u201d against materials promoting \u201canti-vaccine conspiracies\u201d and \u201cvaccine misinformation.\u201d Schiff also requested the companies provide information on their content removal practices and policies to prevent the spread of alleged misinformation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cResearch has shown that combatting anti-vaccine conspiracies by posing factual and counter-factual information as opposing, but equal viewpoints is ineffective at combatting misinformation and disinformation,\u201d Schiff wrote. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/08\/18\/twitter-covid-19-misinformation-joe-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Twitter Enlists Users To Flag \u2018Misleading\u2019 Tweets As Part Of Misinformation Crackdown)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" readability=\"12.456896551724\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Vaccine hesitancy stands between us and the end of this pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>And companies like <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/amazon?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@amazon<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Facebook?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@facebook<\/a> must do far more to tackle the viral spread of misinformation online.<\/p>\n<p>We need transparency. Schiff accused both Amazon and Facebook of profiting off \u201cdangerous\u201d misinformation related to the COVID-19 vaccine, which he claimed directly contributed to deaths from the coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p>Anti-vaccine content produced $1.1 billion in revenue for Facebook, Schiff said.<\/p>\n<p>The letter echoes a <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/09\/08\/elizabeth-warren-coronavirus-misinformation-amazon-andy-jassy\/\">request<\/a>&nbsp;made by Sen. Elizabeth Warren on Wednesday, in which the senator asked Amazon to remove books promoting information and theories about the COVID-19 pandemic and vaccines she deemed misleading.<\/p>\n<p>Schiff also requested the tech giants provide answers to a number of questions concerning their content moderation policies in order to \u201cidentify potential needs for federal regulation.\u201d The lawmaker argued the companies exerted significant influence over public access to information, and needed to be regulated in order to prevent them from facilitating the spread of \u201cmisinformation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy initial inclination is to explore narrowing Section 230 and creating a safe harbor only if companies use best practices,\u201d Schiff said in an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2021\/09\/09\/technology-202-amazon-enters-democrats-crosshairs-over-covid-19-misinformation\/\">The Washington Post<\/a>. \u201cAnd in the case of the social media companies, move away from amplifying for engagement with all the societal harm that that has caused.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sen.
