Number two.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>If that doesn\u2019t bring you back, nothing will.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It\u2019s the beautiful part of baseball \u2014 that it\u2019s the game of our youth\u2014 a game that most of us played as we grew up. We all had our favorite players. From Sandy Koufax to Mickey Mantle, to Ken Griffey Jr. Every little kid during every era of baseball had one special player they looked up to.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>For many of my generation, it was Jeter.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I remember having knock-down-drag-out fights with the kids of the neighborhood on who the best shortstop in the game was. Remember, when Jeter was playing, there were a few shortstops in the league that rivaled him. Alex Rodriguez was the best hitter, Nomar Garciaparra was the best \u201cpure shortstop,\u201d and Jeter had the most rings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>And while you can still debate Jeter\u2019s place among the all-time greats, you can\u2019t argue one thing \u2014 Jeter is a first-ballot member of the Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n<p><span>The 2020 class was introduced on Wednesday, and included Ted Simmons (via veteran committee vote), Marvin Miller (former union boss), Larry Walker, and Jeter; the ceremony was delayed a year due to the coronavirus pandemic.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Jeter is the class headliner. The five-time World Series champion had an illustrious 20-year career in New York, always playing the game the right way and with an incredible level of class. While there are those that will debate his place among the other great shortstops, no one can argue with his impact on the game.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Before his induction on Wednesday, the Yankees organization put out a video \u2014 narrated by Yankees fan Billy Crystal \u2014 detailing Jeter\u2019s storybook career.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"4.1834862385321\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The Road 2 Cooperstown. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/JeterHOF?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#JeterHOF<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/CIhgW2K3Kb\">pic.twitter.com\/CIhgW2K3Kb<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 New York Yankees (@Yankees) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Yankees\/status\/1435583084242538500?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 8, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>From \u201cThe Flip\u201d to \u201cMr. November,\u201d there was no one else you\u2019d want in the field or at the plate in a clutch moment.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>His induction into the Hall of Fame on the first ballot was never in doubt \u2014 though he missed out on being a unanimous selection by one vote \u2014 considering his numbers and years played.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Jeter finished his career with a .310 batting average, 3,465 hits, five Gold Glove awards, five Silver Slugger trophies, and was a 14-time All-Star. He was in our living rooms nearly every October \u2014 taking the Yankees to the postseason 17 times \u2014&nbsp; the very epitome of a baseball player.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe Captain\u201d somehow found a way to keep his name out of the New York tabloids, choosing to keep his off-the-field life private and focus instead simply on his job inside the lines.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In his Hall of Fame speech, Jeter took time to thank the Yankees fans, the only fans he ever knew.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had one goal in my career, and that was to win more than anyone else,\u201d Jeter said. \u201cAnd we did. Which brings me to the Yankees fans. There was only one thing in my life I wanted to be \u2014 and that was shortstop for the New York Yankees. And now I\u2019m a Yankee forever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t be fooled (Yankees fans). You\u2019re passionate, loyal, knowledgeable, vocal, challenging and supporting. There\u2019s a huge responsibility that comes with wearing a Yankee uniform. You have to earn it. You demanded I earn it \u2026 I was always most comfortable on the field.
